My favorite aspect of this novel was probably all of the snow-related themes such as the avalanches, blizzards, and snowboarding/skiing activities. What a perfect way to cool off during the summer - by escaping to the cold wilds of Alaska in your mind! I've always enjoy learning about new settings and this book provided plenty of new information about snowboarding and other activities to keep me interested. I also liked how it introduced a new character, Darcy, who will be the heroine in the third book.

It was great to see the same characters from the first book in this second book of the series. I already knew them in the opening chapters and that helped with my overall enjoyment of the novel. I didn't enjoy the mystery and suspense aspects of this novel as much as the first book, though. This one seemed a bit more stilted in regards to the faith element and sometimes it slowed the pacing down. Plus, there is just something about romantic conflict where the characters drive each other nuts and then constantly fight their feelings that can annoy me. This book wasn't too bad in that respect, but it did start to feel a bit repetitious.

Other than the internal dialog where the hero and heroine kept fighting their feelings for each other and doubting their faith, this story was quite an adventure. There were enough twists and turns to make the reader dizzy, but I like that about this story. I had no clue where it was going. Things just kept getting more and more complicated and the further they searched, the more risky their detective work became. All in all, this was an enjoyable story. I'd recommend it for mystery/suspense lovers who like a heavy dose of interpersonal conflict.

I absolutely loved the book! It was so romantic yet it had the suspense where you just don't want to put the book down. Best book in the series!

Book Summary A Thrilling New Romantic Suspense from the Genre's Newest Star

Piper McKenna couldn't be more thrilled that her prodigal brother, Reef, has returned to Yancey, Alaska, after five years. But her happiness is short-lived when Reef appears at her house covered in blood. A fellow snowboarder has been killed--but despite the evidence, Reef swears he's innocent. And Piper believes him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he's also sworn to find the truth. Piper is frustrated with his need for facts over faith, but he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth may mean risking Landon's career.

With Piper waging her own search, the two head deep into Canada's rugged backcountry--and unexpected complications. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.

Review: Part 1 - I am half way through this book. I was hooked at about the 3rd page!!! My brain is going a mile a minute to figure out the ‘who and whys' of this mystery!! This is just the right amount of intensity and mystery. I also like the characters! Landon is fantastic and you just want to root for him in every way. I like Piper more and more as the story goes along, but she seems very young at times and naive about things at times yet other times she is on the mark. Reef is the perfect dupe for the murder and headstrong which makes him great. Had some difficulty with Kayden, because she can be one who doubts everyone around her and unrealistic about life in her environment (very believable because not every character is picture perfect). Really looking forward to reading Darcy's story!! Liked her immediately and the fact that they think she is some small time ski journalist is great. The background story of Gage and Meredith is great (although it may have been mentioned in the previous book which I have not read) and tantalizing when the next book comes out more answers and probable questions will keep me hooked! I agree with the fanfare I hear about Dani Pettrey this is one well written book! More to come when I finish!

The Final outcome!! The last half did not disappoint! I was on the edge of my seat with the travel, the waiting and the extra events with all the background characters. I have seldom read a book where there were so many characters that really were building blocks to the background and keep me entertained at the same time. I loved it. I really liked the ‘dead ends' and other type of redirects it was fabulous. I hung on every word not wanting to miss a thing!

I would like to thank Library Thing and Bethany House Publishers for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

A wonderful combination of intrigue, danger and romance! Dani Pettrey's second novel in the Alaskan Courage series is not to be missed. Shattered continues the story of the McKenna family of Yancey, Alaska. Reef McKenna finds himself charged with murder and his sister, Piper, is determined to clear his name. Landon Grainger, family friend and deputy, is deeply in love with Piper and struggles to determine the right course of action. This story is full of action and a sweetly developed love that grows from friendship. I highly recommend Shattered and look forward to the upcoming release of the third book in the series, Stranded

In book two of the Alaskan Courage series we return to the rustically beautiful town of Yancey, Alaska. During this installment we meet up with the feisty Piper McKenna. She is on a mission to prove that her beloved brother Reef is innocent of the murder of his friend Karli. Her task is complicated by the mounting evidence and the wavering belief of those surrounding them.

The twists and turns of the plot make for a quick page turner of a book. I was delighted that this second book was every bit as good as the previous book Submerged. The relationship between Landon and Piper is filled with angst and yearning which made for the perfect build up to the conclusion.

I'm looking forward to Stranded which is scheduled to be released in September 2013. There will also be a fourth book in the series . If you are reading this as a selection for your book club she has wonderful discussion guides on her website at www.DaniPettrey.com

I was provided a book to fascilitate my review.
