Tell us a little about yourself. I am a life-long writer and editor. I worked for magazines and newspapers for many years. "Make It, Shake It, Mix It Up" is my second book. Both this book, and "Even the Sound Waves Obey Him" (my first book), are Bible story and science activity books geared for the home school, Christian school or Sunday school. Pastors looking for object lessons for children's sermons would also find help here.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wrote "Sound Waves" as a way to help my young son connect Bible stories with an activity he enjoyed. Science is more up his alley than arts and crafts, so that's the direction we took. Now that he's older, I wanted him to enjoy the same type of activities, but give him more of a challenge.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that people find both the science and the stories about people's encounters with God equally amazing. And, I hope parents, teachers and children have fun! Really, what kid wouldn't enjoy making mummies, growing bacteria in smelly socks, or writing with invisible ink?
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? With each Bible story and lesson, I include a memory verse in which God speaks to people directly, or which record people's reaction to an encounter with God. As I worked my way through the stories, I was awed by the accumulation of wonder I experienced through these men and women.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: These 44 activities, geared toward second- to fifth-graders, are simple and use materials you have around the house. Many of the activities result in an object children can display, use or taste, such as a Christmas tree ornament made of crystals, a spice perfume, homemade toothpaste or 3D glasses.
