Tell us a little about yourself. My wife, Yvonne, and I have been involved in the ministry of Emmaus Road International (ERI) since its founding in 1983. God has taken us on some wild and wonderful "rides" around the world in ministry. On a personal level, we have been married for 56 years. We have four children who have given us 22 grandchildren (this includes some spouses) and 13 great grandchildren (no spouses, yet)!
What was your motivation behind this project? In the early days of ERI, we often heard, "What can I do in missions? It would only be a "drop in the bucket." We began writing articles in our newsletter, "Keeping in Touch," titled: "A Mere Drop in the Bucket." From there they were enlarged to essays in our writing of the "Critical Issues in Cross-Cultural Ministry." And from there we were encouraged to put them in a book!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? By God's grace the original SERVING AS SENDERS was translated into 20 languages. Thousands of missionaries around the world are being better cared for as a result of them developing a Relational Level Partnership Team, providing care in all six areas. The current, revised edition continues to make an impact on Member Care.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? We were humbled at the way God took some "Mere Drop in the Bucket" stories and initiated a resurgence in the Member Care area of missions.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Peter, Paul, Doctor Luke, James, and several others!
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Our goal of 22 years ago has not changed: Our heart is to see missionaries better cared for. We believe that for all the effort Agencies and Church Missions Committees put into member care, there is still a need for the Relational, Personal Level of member Care. This resource and its companion, THE REENTRY TEAM: Caring for Your Returning Missionaries, are two books which will educate ordinary people in the Body of Christ in how to care for their missionary friends.
