Product Description

What is it about motherhood that causes you to abandon any semblance of a spiritual life? Why is it that when you need God's peace the most, you sometimes feel God's presence the least? When you're surrounded by the happy chaos of children, how do you spend time with God--especially if it means choosing prayer over sleep? How can you demonstrate a solid spiritual life to your children if you don't have one yourself?

Mom Seeks God offers a highly relatable story, practical advice, and wry humor to help anyone grow in their faith as they address life changes with grace, patience, and prayer. As readers discover ten essential faith practices, they'll learn that motherhood itself is a spiritual discipline and may even be God's most effective technique for forming us into the people we were created to be.

Endorsements

"This is a book for mothers, to be sure. But it is just as much a book for fathers. indeed, it contains ample life lessons for parents-to-be and for parents-who-have-been. The stories charm us. The lessons instruct us. The insights guide us. Tolle lege, take and read." -Richard J. Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline

"How do we experience the spiritual disciplines when a mom's day is the opposite of 'disciplined'? Julia gives us ancient wisdom boiled down into doable steps so that we can experience our beautiful God in the midst of our messy lives." -Kathi Lipp, author of The Husband Project and 21 Ways to Connect with Your Kids

"Julia Roller has written a wonderful book for moms who long to freshly connect with God. She explores spiritual disciplines in a beautifully honest, practical and humorous way. What a wonderful resource for all of us." -Rebecca St. James, singer, author, actress and new mom

"No one ever tells you that motherhood is some of the most amazing spiritual training ground around. Which is why I'm thrilled Julia Roller does it in Mom Seeks God! New moms and veteran moms alike will love and learn from what Roller has to say about discovering God and practicing the disciplines right in the midst of motherhood." -Caryn Rivadeneira, author of Known and Loved: 52 Devotions from the Psalms

"Instead of an idealized (an unrealistic) depiction of 'supermom,' with disarming honesty Julia Roller describes both the difficulties and surprising growth that can be found in the many beauties and struggles of motherhood. And rather than a prescription of more tasks to put on your spiritual to-do list, Mom Seeks God depicts the spiritual disciplines as freeing invitations-opportunities to peel back the "Mom" label and be the real you with God. In this courageously vulnerable book, Roller depicts for us a spiritual richness mined through the deep, hard soul-work of parenting." -Kelli B. Trujillo, author of The Busy Mom's Guide to Spiritual Survival and the Flourishing Faith devotionals

"It is no secret that having a child profoundly changes our spiritual lives. We are never the same. Julia's honest, forthright and beautifully described journey of practically pursuing the with-God life in the midst of motherhood is an encouragement to me as a fellow-mom and follower of Jesus." -Rachel Quan, Executive Director, Renovare

"Julia Roller's book, Mom Seeks God, meets seeking moms like me where they are, telling them how to pray, fellowship, serve and love in a way that draws us closer to the only One we need. If you're looking for a chance to get to know your Savior better--and some great advice from a mom who clearly has been there--then this is the book for you." -Erin MacPherson, author of The Christian Mama's Guide series

"Any parent who has ever struggled with feelings of inadequacy will appreciate Julia Roller's companionable memoir of her experiences with twelve--make that ten--spiritual practices. Written for readers who feel guilt at the very word "prayer" and terror at the idea of an all-out fast, this book offers a friendly introduction to spiritual practice." -Jana Riess, author of Flunking Sainthood and The Twible

"Julia Roller has given a tremendous gift to new parents, especially moms, with Mom Seeks God. In her quest to dive deep into spiritual disciplines, Julia provides practical practices to connect with God, growing one's faith. Her compassion, honesty, and humor encourage parents to deepen their relationship with The Lord. The tips from other moms sprinkled throughout further add to the breadth of the book and the necessity of spiritual growth while on the journey of parenthood. Mom Seeks God is a blessing for those who desire to walk closer to God and to make every moment count." -Becky Danielson M.Ed., cofounder of 1 Corinthians 13 Parenting, coauthor of Empowered Parents: Putting Faith First

"How appropriate that it was in the midst of feeling chaotic and overwhelmed that I sat down to read Julia's book on practicing the disciplines of a Christian walk. I was immediately renewed in my soul and the rest of the busy-ness seemed to shift into perspective. Julia shares her journey, complete with the successes and the struggles, in a way that is encouraging to the reader who faces their own. She reminds us to get up, each day, and try again. There is no tomorrow or yesterday, only today. Spend some time today with the Lord." -Crystal Lutton, author of Biblical Parenting and Grace Based Living

Julia Roller in her new book "Mom Seeks God" published by Abingdon Press gives us Practicing Grace in the Chaos.

From the back cover: Ten essential spiritual disciplines for busy moms.

What is it about motherhood that causes you to abandon any semblance of a spiritual life? Why is it that when you need God's peace the most, you sometimes feel God's presence the least? When you're surrounded by the happy chaos of children, how do you spend time with God-especially if it means choosing prayer over sleep? How can you demonstrate a solid spiritual life to your children if you don't have one yourself?

Mom Seeks God offers a highly relatable story, practical advice, and wry humor to help anyone grow in their faith as they address life changes with grace, patience, and prayer. As readers discover ten essential faith practices, they'll learn that motherhood itself is a spiritual discipline and may even be God's most effective technique for forming us into the people we were created to be.

It is difficult to find the time for our special time with the Lord when a child or children are demanding so much of our time. And we are mostly happy to give it to them. So what do we do? This is what "Mom Seeks God" is all about. Moms often neglect their own spiritual encouragement and growth in the name of putting their family first. But a mom can't fully demonstrate a solid spiritual life to her children without personally taking the time to pursue one. Ms. Roller shares how she focused on one spiritual practice each month for a year and outlines ten essential spiritual disciplines for busy moms: prayer, fellowship, submission, study, simplicity, silence, fasting, worship, service, and celebration. Along with Ms. Roller by the time you finish the book you will discover that motherhood itself may be God's most effective technique for forming a more faith-filled life. Great book.

Julia Roller has written many different books and articles on spiritual growth and Bible study. Yet, when her first child became a toddler she faced the realization that her spiritual life was suffering in the busyness of life as a mommy. The spiritual disciplines she'd enjoyed before motherhood didn't seem to fit into her life anymore. So she embarked on a year-long journey to focus on one spiritual discipline per month, discovering how to prioritize them in her life once again.

And that's how Mom Seeks God was born. This book is the record of Julia's attempts to practice these ten spiritual disciplines once again: prayer, fellowship, submission, study, simplicity, silence, worship, fasting, service, and celebration. Before you sigh and give up, just know that it didn't come easily for Julia, and she shares her struggles and her practical solutions with you. The goal is not perfection, but growth.

In college, I studied Richard Foster's book Celebration of Discipline in one of my classes. I loved the book in college, but I have to admit that I haven't fit very many spiritual disciplines into my life lately, either. I was glad to see Julia Roller refer to that book throughout Mom Seeks God. Knowing we both enjoyed this book helped me feel a connection with Julia. Her honest admission of her faults, her selfishness, and her failures to focus on prayer and meditation encouraged me to keep reading and not lose heart. At the end of each month, she may have found practical ways to adapt a discipline into her life and schedule, but sometimes she also discovered that her initial understanding of the discipline's purpose or effect was wrong.

At the end of the year, Julia realized that although she could no longer fit hours of intense Bible study and focused prayer into her life, God was using motherhood itself to grow and change her. Motherhood is also a spiritual discipline, and the key to fitting the other disciplines into our life is to live with a daily focus on God and His will for us that day.

I needed to read this book. The very title of the book spoke to me. Mom Seeks God: Practicing Grace in the Chaos. I often feel as if our family life is chaotic - so many voices, so many tasks, so many people needing me. I find myself lacking grace in my responses to them. I don't always respond with Christ's love and later I regret the tone of voice or the words I spoke. I pray that I will have more grace and love in my life the next day, and that my family will continue to show me grace and forgive me for my failures. I often feel dry and thirsty spiritually, exhausted physically. Mom Seeks God encouraged me that God doesn't expect me to give hours of intense Bible study or prayer to Him right now, but I do need to take baby steps to be sure I'm modeling a healthy Christian life to my children. Not only do I need to set a better example, I need the strength and grace that would come from more time spent with God.

If you understand what it is to feel dry, thirsty, exhausted, and longing for grace in your life, I am sure that Mom Seeks God will bless and encourage you. It is possible to fit spiritual disciplines into your life as a busy Mom. Julia Roller will walk you through the process.
