This is the second book in the Texas Boardinghouse Brides series, but the author quickly brings the new reader up to speed, and gives a sweet, heartwarming story with lovable characters. Readers will sympathize with Shannon and Leah and their desperation to improve their lives. Painting a descriptive picture of small-town life, this book is an easy escape into a historical setting.

Vickie McDonough has done a magnificent job in writing Second Chance Brides - Texas Boardinghouse Brides, Book 2. For those who may have missed the first books in the series never fear this book can easily stand to be read alone. Characters such as Shannon and Leah warm a reader's heart, you hate to see the last page end for you know that you will have to say goodbye. I look forward to seeing the next installment in this highly addictive series.

This book was easy reading, and just the right mix of drama and laughter due not only to the difficult situation Shannon and Leah found themselves, but also because of the other mixture of characters they come across in their journey.I definitely recommend that you take the time to read this book.

I really enjoyed Second Chance Brides and can't wait to read the next book in the series. If you enjoy sweet romances then I would highly recommend not just this book but this series. :)

This is a book I devoured and had so much fun reading. You’ll enjoy Vickie’s fun and memorable characters, along with a story that kept me entertained and thankful I live in this time period.

Leah Bennett and Shannon O'Neil are stuck in Lookout, Texas with neither husbands or a place to call home. Ordered completely by accident by the two Corbett brothers trying to find a mail-order bride for their cousin and marshal, Luke Davis, the rascally brothers are ordered to pay the girls' room and board. After the Corbett brothers host a social for young folks in the surrounding counties, the leftover brides have a daunting challenge ahead. Leah meets someone she could very well fall in love with. But will Dan's unexpected surprise following his brother's death be too much for her to handle? Shannon is employed to keep the books by the Corbett brothers, being much too stubborn to live off of their forced generosity. But Mark Corbett is a hard man to work for, and she a shy, timid woman. Will Mark ever find happiness after his tainted past? Or will his attempts at protecting Shannon and his reputation ruin any chance the two of them have to be together? As usual, Mark and Garrett come up with what they think is a solution to their problems - this time in the form of a young people's social. Thinking that the social will marry off the two girls and effectively getting then off their hands, they royally mess things up - again. No matter how much of a headache these two are, I have to admit that they are some very epic brothers. I love every shenanigan they pull, and the results are more entertaining than I might want to admit. If you want a story that will beg to be read again and again, then Second Chance Brides is for you . October 7, 2012

Wonderful Read! I really enjoyed this quick read. This is the second book in the Texas Boardinghouse Series. Shannon O'Neil a beautiful Irish orphan, and Leah Bennett a lovely woman who has been mothering children since she was a little child. They are the leftover brides from the first book, and the Corbett brothers are now responsible for their lodgings. Loved the twist and turns of this story. Some of the happenings will bring you chuckles and others you will need tissues. What all of the characters have to learn is to trust in God. They need to have forgiveness for others and for themselves. They need to follow their hearts and accept the paths the Lord has chosen for them. You can read this book without reading the first book, things are explained enough that you won't feel you are missing something. I was provided a copy of this book by the Publisher Barbour Publishing, I was not required to give a positive review. July 17, 2011

I enjoyed this book. Second Chance Brides carries on where The Anonymous Bride left off. It's the story of two of the remaining brides: Shannon O'Neil, the petite Irish immigrant who's all alone in the world, and Leah Bennett, the oldest of eleven siblings who's running from any responsibility that includes wet diapers and leaking noses. Both mail-order brides still live at Rachel's boardinghouse and there is much interaction between the three women. There is also many scenes with the men who are involved with them: - Mark Corbett is one of the brothers who invited the mail-order brides to town. He likes Shannon's quiet fire but something in his past grips him in fear of being found out. He knows he's destined to walk his path alone and it's going to be far away in the city. - Mark's brother, Garrett wants to marry the women off as soon as possible so he doesn't have to keep paying their boardinghouse bill. There's no way he's ready to settle into marriage at this stage, but maybe he can arrange socials to bring the area's single people together. - Rand Kessler is the rich rancher who wooed Rachel in the first book but lost out to Marshal Davis. Rand is still on the lookout for a wife. And he has his eyes on Shannon. - Dan Howard is the local livery owner who lives in a small house with his mother. He may be the tallest man in town but he smells like the horses he cares for every day. And to round out the activities, Rachel's daughter Jack/Jacqueline continues to steal scenes as she dances her way in and out of trouble with her 2 male cronies and 1 arch nemesis. Because of all the subplots and interactions, there isn't room in this book to deeply delve into the storylines of Shannon and Leah, but in the space available, the author does a creditable job of portraying the women's dreams and fears. We know why they react the way they do and can commiserate with their decisions. Second Chance Brides is an enjoyable read about western life in the late 1800's. The individual characters stay true to their beliefs and I really liked following their stories. I was delighted to discover that Jacqueline - older and perhaps wiser - will be one of the main characters in Book 3 of this series due out in Apr 2011. I can't wait for Jacqueline's book.
