Publisher's Description

2011 ECPA Book Cover Awards Finalist! In the wake of a historic earthquake in the fragile country of Haiti, Kent Annan considers suffering--from the epic to the everyday--as a problem for faith. Less than two weeks after the release of Kent's book about his work with Haiti Partners, he heard the news. Friends trapped under the rubble of buildings. Friends sprinting across the city looking for family. Churches--including one Kent often attended--turned to rubble. Suddenly Kent and his friends were part of an uncomfortable fellowship: people whose faith is shaken by crisis. Taking courage from the psalmists of old and the company of his grieving neighbors, Kent has found that there is solidarity in suffering. Others have followed life to the edge of meaning and have heard God even there, calling for honest faith. Are there questions or realities your faith can't handle? Kent wrote After Shock to help you find out.

Author Bio

Kent Annan is codirector of Haiti Partners, a nonprofit focused on education in Haiti. He's worked in Haiti since 2003living there some of the time and now traveling there regularly from Florida, where he lives with his wife and two children. Annan has spent many of his post-formal-education years going back and forth between North America and working with people who were in different and difficult situations around the world. After receiving his four-year degree, Annan worked for two years in western Europe helping refugees from the former Yugoslavia, Iran, Sierra Leone and other countries. Soon he returned for three years of seminary at Princeton, during which he spent three months studying in India. Upon graduation, he moved to Albania and then Kosovo to work with refugees there. Later he moved back to Princeton to work (and for love!)and a few years later he and his newly acquired wife moved to Haiti for two and a half years. All of these experiences have helped inform Annan's writing and life mission. Ultimately he wants to help people in need as he tries to work out what their lives have to do with ours here in the U.S. His book, tells the story of his move to Haiti and weaves together the nitty gritty joys and stumbles of living and ministering in a two-thirds world environment with reflections about faith, doubt, love and God. Currently the work in Haiti continues to grow. People face incredible daily struggles, but Haiti Partners is investing in education so that Haitians can improve their own situationsand children will grow up with better lives.

"There are also shocks to the system when God seems either absent or negligent. Do we ignore these shocks and their aftershocks?"

For Kent, the shocks and aftershocks refer to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last year. They also refer to the shocks and aftershocks to his faith. Call it, as he does, a "crisis of faith."

Dear God, Today I come to You, bringing prayers for my neighbors from Haiti before Your throne. I don't know what each and every one is going through right now, but I know that each has their own hurts, challenges, problems, needs. I know that some are grieving, whether over an errant child, a lost job, the death of a loved one or something else; some are lonely; some are lost and need the Savior; some are ill and need healing and comfort; the needs go on.

' Aftershock' is an excellent book. I would recommend it to everyone and I pray that the Holy Spirit will minister to each one and meet their spiritual needs. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

I have really enjoyed reading through this book. 'After Shock' is written by Kent Annan and it has helped me to understand the plight of the people in the island, allowing me to journey through some of the real "faith" stories of our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

Present your body to God for His service. Let it be your foremost goal to make a difference for Christ, and you'll have a life well lived. We need to be fully engaged in living our lives for Christ Jesus. In fact, we ought to live in such a way that when we die, the evil one says, "Whew, glad that one's gone!"

Kent's book grabs you at page 1 and doesn't let up til the end. His honest and transparent struggle with faith and God's nature, justice and mercy are woven through the pages of his experience in Haiti, post earthquake. He and his wife lived and worked with the nationals in Haiti, before it was "cool" to go to Haiti. Because of this, the destruction, loss of friends, and mass devastation as a result of the earthquake had a profoundly personal impact on him. But his struggles with faith are somewhat universal, and so the book resonated deeply with my own heart.
