In Searching for God Knows What, Donald Miller's provocative and funny book, he shows readers that the greatest desire of every person is the desire for redemption. Every person is constantly seeking redemption (or at least the feeling of it) in his or her life, believing countless gospels that promise to fix the brokenness. Typically their pursuits include the desire for fulfilling relationships, successful careers, satisfying religious systems, status, and escape. Miller reveals how the inability to find redemption leads to chaotic relationships, self-hatred, the accumulation of meaningless material possessions, and a lack of inner peace. Readers will learn to identify in themselves and within others the universal desire for redemption. They will discover that the gospel of Jesus is the only way to find meaning in life and true redemption. Mature believers as well as seekers and new Christians will find themselves identifying with the narrative journey unfolded in the book, which is simply the pursuit of redemption.
"Miller . . . writes on faith with candor and passion reminiscent of Frederick Buechner and Anne Lamott." The Oregonian
"Like a shaken snow globe, Donald Miller's newest collection of essays creates a swirl of ideas about the Christian life that eventually crystallize into a lovely landscape . . . [He] is one of the evangelical book market's most creative writers." Christianity Today
"For fans of Blue Like Jazz, I doubt you will be disappointed. Donald Miller writes with the wit and vulnerability that you expect. Sharing stories of his upbringing and his journey in more recent years, he perfectly illustrates important themes in a genuine and humorous manner . . . For those who would be reading Miller for the first time, this would be a great start. Relevant
"Whenever people ask me about Donald Miller, I notice the first thing I say is, 'That guy can write.' Having met Don, I also know he seeks to live what he writes, or better said, he writes what he lives. That, I think, is the top credential for a person who writes about ultimate concernsspirituality, meaning, purpose, life, God, and joy. In Searching for God Knows What, you'll find more of his great writing, honest feeling, and spiritual insight to help you on your journey. Brian McLaren Pastor, Authorwww.anewkindofchristian.com

How is it relevant in my life, does it make a difference in the way I live, do I project a loving example of faith, am I willing to step outside my comfort zone? The thing I like best about his books is the feeling that it is almost like a communication with an introspective friend; seriously considering content and thought as I would in an actual exchange with another person.

From this wonderful book I now understand that God doesn't want me to be "good"... He wants me to be His! Miller is able to get beyond the performance delusion and into the reality of a relationship with God... for all the right (healthy) reasons.
John D. Enright3 Stars Out Of 5September 8, 2010John D. EnrightThis book review is on Donald Miller's Searching For God Knows What. It is a book about rediscovering God, Faith, and what it truly means to be a Christian. It is a unique perspective on these aspects and helps draw believers and non believers to God in a unique way.I wanted to read this book because I had heard so much about what a great author Donald Miller is. That is writing is great, and it is something worth checking out. Searching For God Knows What was one of the HARDEST reads I have had in a long time. Not because of the content, but the writing style. I am more of a fiction, story progressing as each chapter is passed kind of reader. Miller's style is not like that. It is more a colletion of ideas and opinions paired with corresponding stories that relate. It took kind of a round about way to get to the point he was trying to make in a chapter. I really struggled with it, so much so that it has taken me longer to read than any book, and it is not terribly long. I will put it on the shelf and maybe try again later, maybe it is one of those books like Mere Christianity that takes a few times of reading for it to stick. If I were to rate it I would give it 2 1/2 shells, middle of the road. Thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishing for providing this book free of charge through their Book Sneeze program.
