Marianne Evans has done it again---from page 1 of Search and Rescue, I was pulled into the story, and was able to relate to each character. Jenny--multiple jobs, trying to make ends meet, busy all the time....and a family issue that keeps her from a lot of things, including God.
Ryan--a devoted follower of Christ, a police officer--following his father's footsteps, more so after he was able to work through what happened to his dad, insightful and persistent--knows what he wants in life, and goes after it.
This is a great story of two people who meet and the things in life that we can either use to make us stronger and better people, or let them hold us back from being the completely whole person God created us to be. We all have baggage, a past, a present--something that shapes us, defines us....how we view that baggage is where we will end up---a better, stronger person in the Lord, or held back and stifled, not living up to our true potential.
Jenny has a mom and a dad. Normal life right? Normal except for the fact that her mom has bipolar disorder. As long as she's taking her medication, everything is grand. When she doesn't, that's when things fall apart. How can Jenny have her own life when she is constantly waiting for the next big crisis? She also doesn't feel it is fair to let someone into her life when things are confusing for her...how can they deal with that?
Ryan has a mom and a dad. Also a normal life right? He followed his father's career path, and chose to become a police officer. Oh, just a minor thing--his dad ended up being paralyzed in a single moment by a gunshot. He had to work through a lot of anger at his hero being affected by such a life-changing occurrence. It changed their relationship to be sure, but in the end, it strengthened it and helped them become the family they are now as they adjusted to a different type of life.
Jenny and Ryan meet at one of Jenny's jobs--as a waitress of Sal's Place. She ends up being on the wrong side of a robbery, and Ryan is the hero. Their relationship goes through much as Jenny wrestles with that big question---how can she commit to someone when her life is in such turmoil, and she's struggling with her mom? How can she ask someone to take on so much?
Ryan shows how Jenny just needs to put her faith and trust in the One who created her, and her mom, and just because her mom is bipolar, that doesn't mean that she will be nor does it have to consume her life. He put it to her very well, "I choose to live my life in the here and now because this-this moment-this day-is all we're guaranteed, and I'd rather be happy where God places me, live in gratitude for His presence and grace in each moment of my life, than to worry about what may or may not come to be in the days ahead." I think if everyone lived their lives this way, we would have a lot less problems in this world. Just some simple words to live by. It may not be the easiest thing in the world to do, but very wise words indeed.
This book is a testimony to how if we give our lives fully to God, He can indeed do beautiful things if we just let Him.
Please read this book, you won't be disappointed!!

Marianne Evans has done it yet again. This author consistently delivers poignant storylines that grip the heart, and captivating characters so real you wish they'd walk off the page and into your life. She is second to none when it comes to making a setting or situation incredibly realistic through the use of outstanding descriptive skills. I'm a speedy reader as a rule, but I always spend an inordinate amount of time between the covers of her books--and that doesn't mean I'm not turning pages as fast as I can. But I keep stopping to jot down some beautiful turn of phrase that gave me spine tingles. Consider this line: "Something about a tough-guy cop turning timid stroked a gentle fingertip against her soul." Could there even be a better way to say that?

Both hero and heroine in this story have heavy crosses to bear, with life situations that would crush a lot of people. When the story begins, Jennifer Foster has almost reached that point. She fits two physically demanding jobs in between frantic situational clean-up behind a bi-polar mother and -- perhaps most exhausting of all -- dealing with the emotional frustration that goes along with that never-ending task. Ryan Douglas walks into her life and refuses to walk back out, no matter how hard she tries to push him away. She's every bit as attracted to the handsome police officer as he obviously is to her, but she's not about to drag any man into the chaos of her life -- especially a man like Ryan. His gentle persistence is enough to melt any heart. This guy is not only easy on the eye, he's also brave, sweet, sensitive, generous and giving. Simply put, he's the ultimate hero, and yet his own life is no bed of roses. His faith is his strength, and he's determined to share that blessing with Jenny, even if she never accepts the heart he's so ready to give.

This may well be my favorite Evans masterpiece to date. Jennifer and Ryan certainly give the series a running start. And yet, I have no doubt this author will find a way to make book two every bit as compelling. She always delivers excellence...and never more so than in SEARCH AND RESCUE (Sal's Place, #1). Way to make an impression, Marianne Evans!

I loved this book. I was immediately drawn into the story of Jennifer and Ryan. Ryan was immediately drawn to a waitress Jennifer at a dinner called Sal's Place. Ryan is determined to show Jennifer he cares by doing small acts of kindness and sharing God's love with her. He helps her see she is a truely a gift from God and she deserves to be loved. Ryan is patient in pursing Jennifer's love, alot like how God pursues us. Jennifer had to learn to accept love. Despite how complicated their families and lives are with situations they can't control, they begin realize the freedom find in giving up the situation to God and being there for each other. Can't wait till the next book in this series comes out. Hope we see more of Jennifer and Ryan in the next book.
(I was given an early copy of this book by the author for the purpose of an honest review.)

This is the first book I have read by Marianne Evans and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found myself immersed into the lives of Ryan and Jenny and being impatient to find out what would happen next. I loved following the love story of Ryan and Jenny and seeing Ryan's gentle patience as he waited for Jenny to realize what a gift God had given them in each other. I enjoyed watching Ryan completely lean on God as he faced the situation of his father's paralysis and teach Jenny to do the same as she dealt with her mother's bi-polar disorder.
