Publisher's Description

Find Hope Through Praying the Scriptures

What do you do when prayer feels futile, an endless rehashing of your problems? If one of the most practical reasons we pray is to obtain strength from God, then we need to understand how that happens. Prayer is about more than making requests. In addition to our agony and questioning, Scripture teaches us to also offer up our surrender. We can voice not only loneliness, resentment, and frustration but also peace, hope, and worship. When we let Scripture teach us a breadth of prayers, we begin to be filled with God's fresh life.

Interweaving his own story of inner anguish and physical illness, Kevin Johnson takes you through nine key Scripture passages that will help you find peace. Each passage is broken down into smaller portions, paired with short phrases to prompt you to pray Scripture back to God.

Learn how to talk to God in your pain.

Pray the Scriptures When It Hurts by Kevin Johnson is a helpful, as well as, inspiring book. I certainly appreciated his honesty regarding his own life. What he has been through and what he has learned will be a great help to those who are in need.

I have heard the phrase pray the scriptures on numerous occasions and was never quite sure exactly what it meant or how to do that. Kevins book addresses what it means to pray the scriptures and walks you through the process.

This book deals with ten different areas of life in which we all experience difficulties. He relates passages from scriptures (i.e. Resentment/ Psalm 73) to those areas and by readings, questions and fill-ins you are guided through and taught how to pray the scriptures.

I would certainly recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House for review.

I first heard of praying the Scriptures from a man who was comforting a woman in pain with very little hope. He showed her how to pray through Psalm 23. I then practiced praying the Psalms. I had not thought of praying the rest of the Bible, until I read Kevin Johnsons book, Pray the Scriptures when life hurts: Experience hope and healing through the power of Gods Word.

Johnson walks readers through nine key Scriptures as he teaches the reader to pray the Scriptures to regain hope and healing. Along the path, he pauses to reveal the agony of his depression and the pain of his neurological challenges. Like David in the Psalms, he describes his pain and depression, and then he turns his eyes on the greatness of God, and he finds hope.

I appreciate his candor in sharing his thoughts and his emotions during his suffering. I have experienced similar thoughts and pain.

Scripture teaches us to offer up not only our agony and questioning but also our surrender When we allow Scripture to lead us to a breadth of prayers, we begin to be filled with Gods fresh life.

Johnson begins the book with nightmares and agony and closes with peace and hope.

Scripture heads the brief chapters; reflections follow; Johnsons challenges unfold, leading to Gods all-sufficiency and Johnsons perseverance. The reader is then prompted to read one or two verses and pray using prompts. The reader repeats the process until the entire passage of Scripture is prayed through. The last section of the chapter includes questions to reflect upon, pray about, and discuss with others.

This book is a great tool for a reader to use alone, and it is an even greater resource in a small group Bible Study.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers, a division of Baker Publishing Group, for my honest review.

Kevin Johnson has created a beautiful devotional for anyone who is seeking to move forward from a wound. Whether it be divorce, illness, feelings of abandonment or betrayal, we all go through the same emotions. This book is a reminder that emotions such as agony, loneliness, questions, frustrations and more are all subjects God address in scripture.

Each chapter is broken up to address the emotion, give explanation of the scripture used, break out the scripture with prayer response prompts, and finally, and area with questions for further discussion. I found this book to be an excellent tool to pray back scripture to God. Johnson says at some point you run out of words when suffering through a hard time. This book helps you to find more words to engage God with, and flesh out emotions.

This would be great for a small group discussion if the focus is healing.
