I'm not a Scott Wesley Brown fan (though I remember him from the "CCM" scene of the 80s and early 90s), but this is an EXCELLENT hymns album! Produced by Billy Smiley (former Whiteheart member & producer of Christian artists like Margaret Becker, Geoff Moore, Aaron Shust, Bebe & Cece Winans, etc.), this is a well-produced, energetic collection of hymns made "new." It's a great mix of acoustic & electric guitars (there's even a searing guitar solo at the end of "He Will Reign in All the Earth"), with drums, keyboards, and some wonderful string & orchestra arrangements. My favorite is probably, "Immortal, Invisible," which starts off on the quieter side, but slowly builds into a powerful chorus with an outstanding choir, wonderful vocal harmonies, and strong guitar & musical accompaniment. Just about makes you want to fall on your knees and join the angels in worshiping a God who is incomparable! One thing that is different - but I like - about this collection is that it doesn't contain most of the "usual" hymns (i.e. Amazing Grace; Holy, Holy, Holy; It is Well with My Soul; Come Thou Fount; etc.). Many of these hymns are unfamiliar to me, but I'm so glad Brown decided to record them. Pretty much all of the hymns speak directly & reverently of God's character, power & authority over our lives and over the world. Great theology really, but sung & arranged in a way that moves your heart. This is not a David Crowder or Delirious kind of "rock-worship" album, but neither is it the "Traditional Hymns of the Faith" kind of album you might find at your local Wal-mart. I'd probably categorize it as contemporary or modern worship. In any case, it's a great album, and might even make me curious enough to check out Scott Wesley Brown's other music.
