Science in the Ancient World is an engaging, exciting, hands-on, multilevel elementary resource that is the second in a planned series of books by Dr. Jay Wile.
Introducing scientific concepts in the context of history, students will follow the work of the "natural philosophers" who lived from approximately 600 BC to 1500 AD, particularly those Christians who studied the natural world in order to learn more about God. Arranged chronologically, chapters focus both on concepts as well as thinkers, including atoms, Hippocrates, Aristotle, Euclid, Archimedes, Galen, Albert of Saxony, Nicholas of Cusa, and finally Leonardo da Vinci and his insights into many different scientific topics.
A total of 90 lessons are included; divided into chronological sections, each section contains 15 regular lessons and 3 challenge lessons. Depending on how much science you wish to teach in your homeschool, there are enough lessons to cover every other day for the length of a school year, or, you can finish the book by only doing two lessons a week (and skipping the challenge lessons).
Hands-on activities are included in each lesson; most are experiments (that have been field-tested for homeschoolers!), and include step by step directions to keep you on track. As this curriculum was designed for all elementary-aged students to use together, the main lesson text takes a conversational, easy-to-read tone that all students can comprehend; illustrations and photographs are integrated throughout. Review assignments close the lesson; questions are grouped for "youngest, older, and oldest" students. Students are instructed to keep a notebook, and the activities include comprehension and reflection notebook assignments. For evaluation, the notebook or oral questions can be used; tests are not included, but are in the Helps & Hints book.
Experiments use common household goods, though for some items that may not be on-hand, a list is provided at the beginning of the book. A full materials list for each section is also included for easy preparation.
The "Helps & Hints" book accompanies the primary text. Divided into three sections, this book will provide helpful notes on the lesson and experiments for the textbook, six tests covering multiple chapters, and finally answers to the tests.56 pages, softcover.
This curriculum is designed for elementary students in grades K-6.
This kit includes:
- Science in the Ancient World Text, 298 pages with glossary and index. Hardcover.
- Science in the Ancient World Helps & Hints Book, 56 pages, softcover.

Homeschool Specialists' Spotlights
When did science begin? Not many science books ask this question about the historical context. Heres a book on how it all began!
Your student will learn how the scientific discoveries made before Christ and through the Middle Ages influence our views and understanding of the field today. With discussions of concepts, hands-on experiments, and review exercises, you can explore for yourselves the discoveries of Hippocrates, Plato, Da Vinci, and other ancient scientists, many of whom were devout Christians.
A listing of the more unusual supplies for the experiments is provided at the beginning of the book; the remainder are things you can easily find in your home. The list is divided into sections, so you'll know what lesson you need each item for and when.
With easy-to-understand text, this program can be used for your whole family. The lesson reviews are broken down by age so you can do the work together as a family and make sure each participant understands.
This resource helps you incorporate world history with science and bring it to life for your students! Grades K to 6. 344 pages total, one hardcover and one softcover from Berean Builders. -- Rebekah

Hands-on Learning Fun!March 29, 2016AmyMarylandAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5How would you like to travel back in time and learn about great contributors to science like Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Galen, and Leonardo da Vinci to name a few? Science in the Ancient World is the second volume following Science in the Beginning in this series of elementary science curriculum written by Dr. Jay Wile. It is a chronological science curriculum that explores important scientific concepts in science before Christ was born through to science in the early Renaissance. The lessons explain this era of science in context to the day and age in which the scientific ideas were discovered and studied and how they are viewed today. This curriculum constantly engaged our 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Just as Science in the Beginning is structured, I am overjoyed that the multi-level approach was part of this program as we loved learning together. As a mother of 10, time is a precious commodity and somehow Dr. Wile seemed to know this when he designed his hands-on experiments. Most, if not all, items needed for the experiments you will find around the house. Sometimes we did the experiments multiple times because they were so much fun. (I even heard my older high school and college teens lamenting that they never had the chance to do such cool experiments.) Adding to the fun factor was a high level of learning retention! Science concepts were effectively displayed through the fun experiments, lessons, and end of chapter questions. Our children's lab books became full of drawings along with answers to key objective questions for each lesson. This home educator could not be more thrilled. The chronological study of science was very appealing as we moved through our own history study and Science in the Ancient World blended beautifully. We are looking forward to continuing our science learning adventure with the next volume, Science in the Scientific Revolution!
