Tell us a little about yourself.  I love science and spend much of each day creating pages for my science website. Sometimes I am answering someone's question, but often I find some exciting tidbits about science and want to share it. Since I am not teaching, I share stuff with readers of my books and website. YEA! FYI: When I am working on my computer, my Maltese puppy sits on a pillow behind me. If you have a question about the book featured on this page or about science in general, you are invited to contact me directly via this email address. ASKVANCLEAVE@AOL.COM Wife of Wade VanCleave-50 years August 29, 2009 Mother of three—Two boys and One Girl Grandmother of six—Two boys and Four Girls Great Grandmother of 6-- Three boys and Three girls Teacher--Secondary classroom science for 27 years. Author Science and Math - Fifty two publications—science and math experiment books for kids and educators. While my teaching credentials allowed me to only teach secondary level, I have books for all ages, K-12. Author Bible Activity Book- I am very excited about this publication. When working with kids as well as adults at church, I often explain Christian principles via science demonstration.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Science Around the Year was the first in a series of books about different science chronicles. First of all, I never wrote a book and submitted it to a publisher. I was asked by a publisher if I would like to write a book. UUM! I've never doubted that my writing career has been orchestrated by God. I wrote one book for my original publisher and then through no work on my part I was passed to another publisher—John Wiley and Sons where I have written 52 books. I tell you this so that you know that my writing career has not been “normal.” I had contracts for multiple books which my editor and I decided on their content when I was ready to write the book. Generally the discussion when something like this—Editor: Can you write a book about the different seasons? Me: Yep!! Then I had the freedom to pick and chose the experiments for the book. Often the name of the book was decided on by my editor. In other words, we all worked together and VOILA' you get a fun book with activities that relates to the different seasons. I do love this book. But, then I had so much fun writing every one of my books.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  This answer is the same for every book I've written---I WANT KIDS AND EDUCATORS TO PLAY AND HAVE FUN WITH SCIENCE. I hope that this book about seasons stimulates a desire to want to know more about the ever changing world around us. Do you notice that there are different constellations during each season? Changing leaves is the most dramatic change, but what about other things—the birds that visit your feeders? ETC---

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I want you to know that I get very involved with each book I write. I claim ownership to many experiments in my books, but my creative juices start flowing when I have an idea of how to explain a science concept. I learn so much science with every experiment or activity that I create.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I love all science authors and have purchased many books during my teaching and writing career. I cannot identify any one author that inspires me most. I can say that I am now corresponding with Margret Kenda, who has written several science books, Science Wizardary for Kids She and I are the same age, 68 at this writing and I am excited about having a science friend. I could talk science 24/7, but most of my family and friends don't share my passion. With an email friend, I can chat any time I want to and she can respond when her schedule permits. YEA!!

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  The best thing about being a writer is that I get to do what I like most--learn more about science-experiment-- I also have great excuses for all the spiderwebs that collect--I live in a rural area and spiders love me. I've had housekeepers--not sure why they left--but each most likely are still talking about the time they worked for the science writer, Janice VanCleave. Those that remained for a time would ask if I wanted the spiderwebs inside the house cleaned out, or if a coffee cup that was found under a pile of papers was part of an experiment or could the kunk inside be scraped out. While writing about insects, I had different plastic food containers with beetles in my frig. I forgot to label a few which gave the housekeepr a start. One lady was sooooo cool. She actually caught a click beetle with a plastic cup and was so excited when she presented this treasure to me. YEA!!! I've about gone through available housekeeper in my area, but I am alert to new families moving into our small community.
