Writing in a warm, friendly style much like her articles in Homeschool Enrichment where she is a regular columnist, Mellott shares the ups and downs from her eight years of homeschooling along with Scripture to inspire. Each devotional falls into one of eight themes: Home Basics, Homeschool and You, Homeschool and Family, Gifts We Give Our Children, And a Child Will Lead Them, Spiritual Vitamins, and Faith of Their Own.
The devotionals follow a traditional devotional style with a verse for the day, an anecdote and application, and a question or suggestion for the reader to dig deeper. Some of the anecdotes hearken back to Mellott's upbringing in India, most are from her homeschooling experience, and a few contributions come from homeschooling friends. Sometimes Mellott offers suggestions, such as dealing with stress or helpful resources for a given situation. The devotionals are both practical and inspirational. She draws on a variety of Scripture passages, from Genesis 1:1-2 through Revelation 21:4-5.
Michael P. Farris, chairman of Home School Legal Defense Association, writes the foreword. The book also includes an index based on the themes.
I do not usually read devotional books, but I enjoyed School is Where the Home Is. On several days her theme hit my need for the day. I could relate to most of the anecdotes from my own twenty-plus years of homeschooling. Mellott'a application of Scripture was good with no verses stretched beyond their real meanings. I recommend this book, especially for parents who have not homeschooled long and for those who do not have a support group or nearby friends who homeschool. Debbie W. Get this book!August 8, 2011MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Anita Mellott shares from her heart and her life experiences in this 180-day devotional for parents. Although written with homeschool families in mind, practical applications can apply to other situations and all can glean from her practical how-to-live-a-godly-life advice. It's been years since I homeschooled, but I love children and could easily relate to her anecdotes and tips. An added bonus comes from her international perspective of growing up in India and those stories provide the flavor of another culture.
School Is Where the Home Is tags each daily reading with one of eight categories, such as "Homeschool Foundations," "Gifts We Give Our Children," and "Spiritual Vitamins." The topics are also indexed in the back. Every day begins with a Bible verse and concludes with "Digging Deeper," a way to apply or act on the day's focus. This resource can help a harried mom find an oasis of calmness as she takes a few moments daily with this inviting guidebook. The author continually reinforces spiritual lessons and points readers to their source of true strength and wisdom, the Lord.

Most homeschoolers know God called us to teach our children, and that He equips us to do so, but it's still hard work. The devotionals in this book are soothing, motivating, and energizing--and many brought me to tears as I remember stops along my own homeschooling journey.
After fourteen years of homeschooling, burnout is something I deal with on a daily basis, yet each of Anita's devotions touch my heart in a special way. They remind me of why I homeschool, the blessings that come with homeschooling, and they are like a balm that soothes my burn out. Anita's realistic look at both the ups and downs of her homeschooling journey remind me that I'm not alone--and most importantly, continue to remind me that God walks with me as I follow His guidance obediently.
I highly recommend this book for every homeschooler, no matter whether you're just starting out or you're an accomplished veteran.
Naomi MuschWisconsinAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Meaty Devotion Book No Matter Your StageJuly 20, 2011Naomi MuschWisconsinAge: 45-54Gender: femaleI'm going to make a plug today for a really wonderful new devotional called School is Where the Home Is - 180 Devotions for Parents, by Melita Mellott (Judson Press -- http://www.judsonpress.com).
After raising five kids, I'm about to enter my FINAL year of homeschooling. (Well, it's never really final, is it?) My youngest daughter will graduate in 2012. So, you might think I've got it figured out.
Even after two decades I still need encouragement. I still need affirmation from on High. I still need the wisdom of others. It doesn't matter what stage you are in the homeschooling journey, you will always need support. But even if you are just starting out, you also have something to offer to others.
School is Where the Home Is is Melita's offering -- theoretically given as one devotional reading for every day of the school year. Each is about a page long, and addresses a specific topic with a Scripture, some story application, and thoughts for digging deeper. That's the usual layout for a devotional, but I thought the author did a fabulous job of digging into areas specific to us homeschoolers using a unique voice. I've read devotional books for homeschoolers before. This is one with meat. Melita is candid about her own experiences as she shares thoughts on communication, purpose, flexibility, annoyances, customization, heritage, prioritizing, failure, and much more.
The book also contains an index organized categorically into eight sections: A Faith of Their Own, A Child Will Lead Them, Gifts We Give Our Children, Homeschool Basics, Homeschool Foundations, Homeschool and Family, Homeschool and You, and Spiritual Vitamins. If you need a specific boost or reminder, you can zero in on devotions focused on one of those sections.
Today my first Back to School advertisement arrived.(It's still July!) As your thoughts start turning in that direction, consider adding School is Where the Home Is to your book list. It's an apple-a-day for 180 days!
