I like everything in the kit, the only thing I wish they included was a base ten set. So far that is the only extra math manipulative I have needed to buy.

Besides being required for Saxon K - 3. This was recommended for younger kiddos needing something fun, while teaching older ones. I think this would work for little kids who don't throw things to the wind. The pieces are many & small. My oldest two, as toddlers, would have loved this and kept everything on a cookie sheet. My third child... I probably won't. "He's happier than a tornado in a trailer park" ~ Mater, Carrs. You know your kid!

    My overall feelings on Saxon:

When I homeschooled, I used Saxon in highschool. I loved it! The instructions were simple to understand and I didn't need anyone's help/tutoring to do my work.

When I began homeschooling my own children (much younger than high school). I was told by other parents to stay away from Saxon. "Too time consuming" was the general complaint. I spent 2 years with another program that was great, but not spiral. My kids kids were excellent with current math concepts, but forgot past ones (subtraction, borrowing, regrouping, etc.). My children also didn't know how to tell time consistently, read a calendar, and struggled with months of the year & days of the week. I had hoped this would come together on it's own, but it hadn't.

After joining a co-op that promoted Saxon and talking with parents that had similar experience with other math curriculums & similar hesitations with Saxon... they reassured me it was the best decision they ever made! (Math-wise).

I tested my boys for the proper level. I was EMBARRASSED that my boys (3rd & 4th grade), who were "ahead in math", tested into K Saxon. Again, moms from my co-op reassured me. They said to start with 1st grade, because it covers Kindergarten again.

I received my Saxon 1. I LOVE IT!!!! I think the lessons will go quickly. Both my boys have gaps in understanding quantities of time (hours, days, weeks, months, etc.). Saxon has a GREAT way to teach those. Because my boys only have gaps in their math, I think most of these lessons will go quick, while others will take more time. I am grateful to find something to help with those gaps.

Because math is important to me, I want them to catch up. Saxon is set up to complete 4 lessons a week + one review day. I hope to do 5 lessons a week OR 30 minutes a day and however easy/hard a lesson is... is how far we get that day. I see some days completing 2 lessons, others 1.

This is a long review, but it took me a long time to go with Saxon. I hope I answered any similar questions/concerns you may have had.

My only problem is some I don't have all of the tangram pieces needed to do all of the problems in the Saxon Math book.

Glad this product comes in a tote to contain it all. I was, however, disappointed with the fact that the tangram shapes where not the correct size to match the Saxon Math tangram shapes activities.
