All three of my children have successfully used Saxon Math after switching from other programs in the first years of home schooling, starting with book 5/4 through currently using Algebra I. The lessons are easy to follow with a consistent format, and taught directly to the student for independent work. Each concept has a chapter reference, so the student can refer back as needed. While Saxon strongly advises not altering lessons and the amount of practice problems to successfully complete the program, my children were overwhelmed with the amount of work given for each lesson, so I adjusted to each of my childrens ability and progress by only giving half of the mixed practice problems, splitting the lessons over two days or, if the child was buzzing along, doubling lessons then full mixed practice and lesson on alternate days. Testing is done on Fridays. If switching to this program after using others, be sure to take the placement tests offered on the Saxon website, and not go by grade level, to ensure there are no learning gaps to successfully use this program.
