Focusing on algebraic reasoning and geometric concepts, Saxon Math Homeschool 5/4 teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts.
Following Saxon Math 3 or Saxon Intermediate Math 3, the Saxon 54 textbook concepts such as number sense, numeration, numerical operations, measurement and geometry, patterns, relationships, math functions, and data manipulation are introduced. Students will specifically learn to add three-digit numbers, subtract numbers with re-grouping, read time, write numbers, estimate arithmetic answers, divide with two-digit answers, multiply three or more factors, simplify fraction answers, use a decimal number line, and more.
Lessons contain a warm-up (with facts practice, mental math, & problem-solving exercises); introduction to the new concept, lesson practice exercises where the new skill is practiced, and mixed practice exercises, which includes 25-30 old and new problems. In-depth "Investigations" are provided every 10 lessons, and have their own set of questions. Math 5/4 also includes 8 in-lesson activities and 5 investigation activities.
The Tests and Worksheets book provides a "facts practice test" for each lesson as well as a test covering every 5-10 lessons. Investigations are also included.
The Solutions Manual provides answers for all problems in the lesson (including Warm-up, lesson practice, and mixed practice exercises), as well as solutions for the supplemental practice found in the back of the student text. It also includes answers for the facts practice tests, activity sheets, and tests in the separate tests & worksheets book.
Saxon Math 5/4 is designed for students in grade 4, or grade 5 students who are struggling with math.

elsa5 Stars Out Of 5Great program, dissappointed in materialsJuly 16, 2012elsaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I will be the first to admit that I overlooked that the Saxon 5/4 said "softcover" after the textbook, since the previous Saxon textbooks have been hardcover that is not something I even keyed in on...it just seems that for the price paid that quality of the materials is very lacking and this is more against Saxon than against CBD. Be forewarned my fellow Saxon lovers, there is a dive in the quality of materials between Saxon 3 and Saxon 5/4. I am sure the overall quality of education is still top notch, I just like my materials to be a bit more durable. I would have even paid a bit extra for a hard copy version, which is what I came on here tonight to do if there was one available. :(

Valorie Thomas5 Stars Out Of 5September 21, 2010Valorie ThomasThis is a great math curriculum. It has quite a bit of work to keep my fourth grader busy!!!
Jacqualine Boyko5 Stars Out Of 5March 17, 2010Jacqualine BoykoWe just started homeschooling our kids and my son who was in grade 6 in public school has been working on the Math 5/4 to get back on track and he is loving it. He told me the other day that he loves doing math now because the Math 5/4 explains things in a way that he can understand. I am so glad that we went with the Saxon math.
Frances Martin5 Stars Out Of 5October 24, 2008Frances MartinThe lessons are easy to understand, it explains everything in detail. They break the lesson up in 3 sections: first the memory work, 3-4 questons that is to be done in your head. Second there's the mixed practice, you have several questions of previous lessons (review). Third the work for the new lesson. There are speed drills for every lesson. This curriculum is easy and I wish I had used sooner. I'm using Saxxon for all my kids now.
Q: Is this kit all we need for a year of 4th grade math? Nothing else to purchase?
Yes, this is a full year of 4th grade math and, although there are some supplemental items available, nothing else is required to complete the course.
Q: What is the year published for the third edition? I am looking at the Saxon Math 54 third edition homeschool kit in a retail box. What year was this set published?
This is the 2005 edition.
Q: is there any difference between the 5/4 retail box kit and the 5/4 homestudy kit?
Contents of these kits are identical. The only difference is the box.
