My son cannot wait to get started on this program. He is not a sit and do pages and pages of facts type child, and this program looks to be much more intense, yet the activities are providing the same results but with hands on fun! Most of the moms in our homeschool group use the Saxon Math program and highly recommend it.
I love Saxon math. It is very easy to use for any age child. However, my children seem to be ahead of the curve in the early years. My kindergartener is using the Saxon 1 and we still skip some things because he already has mastered them. It is really easy to use multiple grades together, even though the meat of the lessons may be different. We can do the meeting book together and then split into separate lessons, or sometimes even combine them.
This is my first year of homeschooling and we have LOVED Saxon Math 1. We purchased the meeting book and have enjoyed it. It is primarily calendar/weather graphing/counting/patterning...basic math facts, but my 1st grader enjoys doing them. I ordered a second Math 1 Meeting Book and my 4 year old is able to join her older sister in math...a fun start for her! The rest of the lesson I do with just my first grader. She loves the variety (basic math facts, measuring, money skills, peg boards & rubberbands, time telling, etc.) There is a lot of review built in, which is so great. When she has a concept down, we just skip the review questions. But, if she is struggling with something, it is so nice to have the review built into the lessons/worksheets. There is an assessment every 5 lessons, so you always know if you need to review some more. My daughter is a very hands-on, kinetic learner, so we purchased the manipulative kit, as well. You could probably make everything that is in it, but to have it all together and already made was GREAT! We will use it for all three of our kids, so the money was well spent. I would highly recommend Saxon Math 1.
