Saxon Math 1, Home Study Kit
My son is in grade 1 and LOVES doing math because of this curriculum! It is well planned with little things like the workbook being opened from bottom to top instead of left to right like a regular book. Either a right or left handed person can easily work on each page. The use of manipulatives is essential in my opinion to really make this curriculum shine. Fantastic!

I was sort of thrown into homeschooling and needed a math curriculum quickly. I was told by a few people to try Saxon. I was thoroughly disappointed. It is extremely boring and repetitious. My 4 year old was able to do these problems (no formal schooling). I was also disappointed in some of the manipulatives. The linking cubes are very hard to put together. My 6 year old struggled and it was impossible for my 4 year old. The clocks were very confusing. If you set the time for 10:45 it looks like 11:45. I ended up buying a $1.00 clock from a dollar store.

Thorough and pleased
Although at the beginning of each book the number of review lessons are a bit tedious that is also what pleases us about Saxon. It is a very thorough math program.

User-friendly, easy to modify!
As a former public schoolteacher, I say THIS program has been WONDERFUL (and we have tried 2 others just in the 2 years we've homeschooled!). I LOVE that the concepts build upon each other, that there are daily story problems, and that my son is learning the "whys" behind the math, not just a bunch of rules. My only "negative" is that this grade starts out VERY easy and workbooks are not visually exciting/colorful.... however, that being said- I DID choose to use this level when he had honestly "tested" (w/the Saxon placement test) at the 2nd grade level, so this is probably my own fault! Highly recommend this product! I feel comfortable using it, and can easily adapt the scripts/recommended "lessons" to meet my son's needs. I will honestly be using this 1st grade program w/my Kinder next year, but I do think it is 1st grade appropriate when compared to public school.
