I enjoyed reading this historical fiction novel. Saving Amelie is set in Germany during World War II. It shows what life was like at a time when great evil prospered in Germany. It also gives a glimpse into the eugenics movement not just in Germany, but in the United States as well. The author shows some of the horrors of the eugenics movement and the tragedy faced by those who didnt meet the ideal Aryan standards that Hitler wanted.

This book weaves together the stories of a young American woman, an American journalist, a little deaf girl, a German Oma and her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, a Jewish girl, and a Catholic priest. Their lives intersect in a fearful time, and they learn to love and care for each other and for those in need of protection. This book is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

What a powerful Book! It is difficult to read because of the travesty of Germany in World War II. Yet it is important to read and understand what those times were like. The book is well written and I felt like I was living the life of Rachel. I cried a lot. In the process of reading I found some similarities to what is going on in America today which makes it even sadder. While this is fiction, it correctly portrays what it was like in Germany. I loved the Spiritual thread throughout the book. This book had a great impact on my life. This book is a finalist for the 2015 Carol Award which is well deserved.

Touching, exciting, compelling, disturbing, read-in-one-sitting (Don't start in the evening if you want some sleep!) amazing, overwhelming and more. It's all been said, except ...

The 'slick' SS officer. supposedly such a super model for the perfect man is a real stinker, cruel and vicious to the core. I think Ms. Gohlke cuts him a bit too much slack or paints him too awful later in the book? The cruel Drs. Mengele and Verschuer being as intelligent as they were, would have seen that and looked for a different pairing for the beautiful Rachel.

Having grown up 'over there' I was glad to see Ms. Gohlke's objective and meticulous research. By 1939 - 41 it was already far too late for any concerted opposition. I am still amazed there was as much as is mentioned in the book. Bethel was mentioned briefly as being on the radar - it was an amazing place and totally devastated later.

[Also I was reminded of the how the Japanese were treated here. The Jewish folk. The black people. Roman Empire times. And now the worldwide cruelty.]

Without Christ as Savior humans will always be cruel and evil, covertly or overtly.

The slow process (ten years) of Rachel, Jason, Rivka, becoming believers seems a little unrealistic to me, But I am glad that ultimately, in the book, all ends well.

I intended to just mention Mr. Schlick and be done. The book got to me. It will be a keeper, just like a couple of other authors' (Munsons, Helen McInnes {an oldie} ) books.

Re-reads so I'll not ever forget and to remind me that early discernment gives early means to combat and help.

Saving Amelie by Cathy Gohlke rivets you from the start. An exciting race of a story, built on the stories of two compelling women, so different in every way, yet more alike than they imagine. The plight of the handicapped in Nazi Germany comes to life in darling Amelie, shedding light on the dangers of the eugenics movement the danger of any society that rules certain lives have no value. A beautifully written novel you wont want to miss.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was interesting to read about the differences and similarities of a set of twins that had been raised very differently. I also liked reading about the courage of the people who helped those who were oppressed and killed by Hitler.
