This was the only book I could get through our local library that accurately taught about Saint Nicholas of Myra - the real person - rather than the hybridized American legend of Santa Claus. The European traditions have more in common with the Saint Nicholas that orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians celebrate. I desired for my children to know the Christian Saint Nicholas so I have the board book version. It is a great introduction for young children to the real Nicholas. The book helps showcase Nicholas' simple generosity to the poor and care for the disenfranchised. The book highlights just one Nicholas legend - generously giving dowries to three sisters. There's a strong message about Jesus being the real gift of Christmas at the end. The basic message of the book is that Nicholas loved God and Jesus, and shared the good things that God had given him with others. I liked it well enough that we bought the book and read it every year at the beginning of Advent, and especially on December 6 - Saint Nicholas Day.
Teresa3 Stars Out Of 5January 16, 2008TeresaI think I was expecting more from the book than it told. Even though it tells the stories of how he gave money for the girls dowries, at the end of the book it gives the impression that they aren't certain about the story. I was looking for something more concrete to share with my six year old about what he did for children. The artwork was beautiful.
Pam Gabriele5 Stars Out Of 5December 29, 2007Pam GabrieleThis is a precious story. I love how it shows sacrificial giving, giving without expecting anything in return, & giving without any recognition to the giver.
Friends Presch2 Stars Out Of 5November 24, 2007Friends PreschThe book only talked about St. Nicholas's giving of the coins for the diaries of three sisters. I was hoping for more information to share with my students.
Mom of eight5 Stars Out Of 5December 30, 2006Mom of eightI purchased this sweet book for my children for Christmas this year. I was skeptical...thinking it would be impossible to find the book I've been searching for eighteen years to find. My children were never taught "Santa Claus" was real so, "Santa, Are you for real? (another book)" wasn't what really fit our family. This book was perfect!! We all loved it!
