Gary Thomas is a writer in residence at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and an adjunct faculty member teaching on spiritual formation at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Sacred Marriage, Sacred Pathways, Pure Pleasure, Sacred Parenting, and the Gold Medallion Award-winning Authentic Faith.
Scores of books have been written that offer guidance for building the marriage of your dreams. But what if Gods primary intent for your marriage isnt to make you happy . . . but holy? And what if your relationship isnt as much about you and your spouse as it is about you and God?
Everything about your marriage--everything--is filled with prophetic potential, with the capacity for discovering and revealing Christs character. The respect you accord your partner; the forgiveness you humbly seek and graciously extend; the ecstasy, awe, and sheer fun of lovemaking; the history you and your spouse build with one another--in these and other facets of your marriage, Sacred Marriage uncovers the mystery of Gods overarching purpose.
This book may very well alter profoundly the contours of your marriage. It will most certainly change you. Because whether it is delightful or difficult, your marriage can become a doorway to a closer walk with God, and to a spiritual integrity that, like salt, seasons the world around you with the savor of Christ.
MrsP5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent StudyNovember 28, 2014MrsPQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Our small women's bible study used this book and were so happy with it we completed the DVD/workbook study portion with our husbands. I would highly recommend this book for any couple at any stage, as it has valuable information and techniques regardless of the stage of marriage. However, it would be particularly helpful to those in a engagement/premarital place; I really wish I had seen/read through something like this BEFORE my husband and I married. It would certainly have spared us some tears and heartache! I cannot recommend this book enough!
jackdn0075 Stars Out Of 5May cause horripilation, humiliation, and celebration...in that orderNovember 13, 2014jackdn007Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The main thesis of the book is that marriage is designed to make us more like Jesus. The result of "Jesusness" is more important than happiness. The process of identifying and killing our own selfishness and pride is a very gruesome and painful journey. This is most amplified in marriage. However, the end result is far more loving, joyful, and peaceful than an alternative self-centered path. The labor involved through marriage can count for something so amazing that the most tired spouses will still sing praises to the joy of marriage.

Maria5 Stars Out Of 5Timeless Relationship LessonsAugust 26, 2014MariaI had read so many good reviews about Gary Thomas' teaching and so I ordered this book (several of them) to give as Wedding gifts to friends. I also kept one for myself, read it and found myself nodding in agreement with Gary's timeless message of Holiness over happiness. The idea extrapolated in the book extends itself to all kinds of relationships, not just marital ones (since I am not married). Gary delivers a lesson steeped in Scripture that invites us all to see beyond the ephemeral pleasures of the moment! Thank you!

Q: What about divorce? I appreciate the comments on how this book may strengthen marriages and how people should read this before they marry, but what about those who are contemplating divorce? Will this book help those who are struggling with extremely challenging marriages? I'm looking for something to help a marriage support group at our church. Thank you for any insight.
This book does contain chapters that deal with perseverance, embracing difficulty for character building, and forgiveness which are important for struggling marriages.
