We purchased this study as well as the men's study on stress for our church Bible study. A review for the men's study is found on that book's page. Unfortunately, after having the staff and getting women's perspectives about the study, we have chosen not to offer this study. A problem we encountered with the books as a set was that the chapters don't match up, so we could not offer the study as a couple's study, even though it seems they are marketed as such.

The format for this book was set up for good discussion, and offered a quick, often thought-provoking look at how a middle-class American woman often lives. We encountered some issues with the study:

First, the study is very felt-needs. While the information is handy and thought-provoking, it's very feeling-oriented, with little in the way of actual Bible study. Even the questions leave the Bible open for interpretation by asking, "What is Paul thinking when he writes this," or, "How you respond emotionally to Jesus' words in this passage?"

Second, the choice of secular material to draw from is curious, to say the least. The book draws from sources such as Cosmopolitan, the novel "The Devil Wears Prada," and even from a book with the Dali Lama as co-author. Did the editors have to find such spiritually and morally bankrupt sources to present some of the basic ideas found in this study?

By using the book, we would be condoning the secular reading that is found in this book; reading that is far from Christian-oriented. There is thought-provoking information, but in the end it just wasn't enough for us to offer this study in our church for any purpose.

The format of this study is great for personal study and small group discussion. The questions get to the heart of our attitudes and daily actions, and challenges us to make changes in the way we think and live. I also appreciate the scripture passages from "The Message" paraphrase/translation.

Are ladies small group began this 2 weeks ago. So far we have very much enjoyed the study and have found some very thought provoking questions that spurred good conversations. I feel that it will really help us to learn to open up and be there for each other.

This is a study that guides, rather than tells. It is an excellent tool for small groups because of the interaction it creates as participants are strongly encouraged to look at what is going on in their own lives and to evaluate what is really important. Capturing God's truth through the true-to-life words of "The Message," as well as numerous anecdotes, each one sees herself, her need, and God's answers.

Leads to great discussion with the group, but doesn't dive into the Bible as much as we would have liked.
