Eye opening and motivational

After being a fan of the movie Rudy, I was really excited to review Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's book Rudy: My Story.
Be forewarned. The book is not like the movie.
This is not the sole story of how Ruettiger became a Notre Dame football story. Ruettiger takes an honest look at his life, the perseverance, the failures, the successes , the events that made him into what he is today. He discusses what brought forth his movie.
Ruettiger's story is motivational and eye opening. He shows us how to make our dreams come true.
I received a copy of this book from Thomas Nelson for the purpose of review.
"Rudy—My Story" is more than the story of a kid who played football for one of the greatest collegiate teams ever, but about the determination that brought him to the point of getting to take the field_for all of 27 seconds in the final game of his senior season! The story is none other than Rudy Reuttiger, the dreamer who found a way into Notre Dame and whose hard work carried him to a place where people told him he would never get to go.
Daniel "Rudy" Reuttiger was one of 14 kids growing up in an industrial town outside Chicago in the 1950s. Nothing came easy for him, but Rudy was not a quitter. Despite his undiagnosed dyslexia, Rudy graduated from high school, completed a tour of duty in the Navy, and worked several jobs back at the power plant. His deep desire, however, was to attend Notre Dame and play on the football team. Through the help of key individuals and the determination to do his best, Rudy was able to fulfill his dreams. The book could have ended as he was carried off the field on his teammates' shoulders (as it does in the movie version), but the real Rudy has more to tell. In "Rudy—My Story," he talks about how the same persistence that was the backbone in his early life was essential years later in getting the blockbuster movie created. It's actually quite remarkable that the film actually did get off the ground, considering how many obstacles had to be cleared away.
If you're looking for a motivational read that inspires you to dream big and have faith that your dreams can happen, Rudy is proof positive that it doesn't matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get back up.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of "Rudy—My Story" through Book Sneeze, in exchange for my honest review.
Forever I have know this story by the movie, Rudy. But I love reading the facts even more than viewing the big picture. I think one of my favorite parts of reading a book about someone I have heard lots about is getting to know their history...from childhood up.
Rudy, written by Daniel Ruettiger himself, is an inspirational story of perseverance and determination. He was one of fourteen children in a home with strong family values and ethics. His life wasn't a fairy tale, but one of good family structure and discipline. There were low points and high points. Mr. Ruettiger wrote in a very no-nonsense way describing both the negative and positive influences in his life.
He set his mind to do something, and he didn't stop until he had attained that. This is a lesson for anyone who reads this book.
The only disappointment I had in the book was the shallowness of true faith. "Good works" don't get you to heaven. Only faith in the works of Jesus Christ. The difficulty being that unless there is true salvation all these wonderful things don't matter.
This is a positive story with a great moral message.
The inspirational real-life story of the man behind the beloved movie Rudy, his continued determination to make his dreams come true, and how you can dream big too.
How does a lower middle class kid, who suffered through school with undiagnosed dyslexia, get into Notre Dame and become the inspiration for millions in a Hollywood film that has become one of the most inspiring sport movies ever made? He never gave up.
For the first time, read Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's real life story and learn the behind-the-scenes details of the ten years it took to make the movie and how that tossed him into a new career of public speaking that continues on stages today alongside world-class leaders and speakers.
Divided into four parts, each include details of the failures and hard lessons he's learned along the way and how hitting the reset button was often the best thing that ever happened to him:
Growing up one of 14 kids in Joliet, a brief stint in the Navy opens a new world of opportunity and dreams
Rudy finds a side door into Notre Dame where in a legendary moment he becomes one of only a few players in school history to be carried off the field
The struggle to find a career after college leads him to his new impossible dream, to get a movie made about his life story
Launched into a new world, Rudy finds his true calling as an inspirational speaker and reveals how losing site of his own dreams nearly derails him, but how once again, in learning another of life's most important lessons, he finds a reason to hope again—through the eyes of the next generation of Rudys
Rudy doesn't represent some far-fetched Hollywood fantasy that most people can never attain—the power of his story comes from the fact that at heart he's just an "Average Joe." The moral is that anyone with a dream can make that dream a reality—as long as they're willing to put in the hard work, and heart, it takes to get there.
This book really added a lot to the movie. It gave a much bigger and fuller picture of the story of Rudy. The book starts a little slow but then picks up. I like how he illustrated life as a series of journeys because accomplishing one of your dreams doesn't mean you'll be content with that lone victory for the remainder of your days.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for an honest review.
During a stint in the US Navy, Rudy Ruettinger discovered a dream in his gut—to attend Notre Dame and play football for their team. One of fourteen children, Rudy was never expected to succeed by teachers, partly because of an undiagnosed learning disability that resulted in poor grades. During school years his life was headed for trouble. How he accomplished his dream anyway is a heart-warming story that challenges readers to follow his example.
Rudy always worked hard and then spent the time and effort to be even better. After his early dreams were amazingly fulfilled, he dreamed about a movie of his life---to inspire others with hope. That dream required years of perseverance and hard work--and discovering he'd sometimes trusted the wrong people.
After graduating from college, he tried several careers and eventually found where he belonged. Rudy made and spent a great deal of money. However, in the great recession of 2008, he lost huge amounts. Discouraged for a while, Rudy regained hope in an unexpected way.
The honesty in this story of his struggles assures readers that their dreams can become reality.
