Product Description

Pauline scholar Thomas Schreiner presents a fresh analysis of the substantive Book of Romans. Each exegetical unit of this commentary is divided into four parts: (1) introduction, theme summary, and structural outline; (2) translation; (3) paragraph-by-paragraph exegesis and exposition; and (4) additional notes that comment on unique themes of a passage, interpretive problems, textual variants, and other critical issues. This volume also includes these helpful design features: shaded text gives a broad overview of each exegetical unit, its place in Romans, and the way Paul expected his readers to respond to his words, unshaded portions dissect the intricacies of the Greek text, and a running outline at the top of each page keeps readers aware of their position in the overall structure of the book.

Schreiner has produced (in my opinion) a fantastic volume dealing with the message of Romans. Much in the work is to be appreciated:

    1) He provides an overarching view of each passage, summarizing it as a whole before breaking it down. This allows us to see the big picture as well as the pieces that make it up.

    2) He approaches the text from a conservative standpoint, assuming that Paul intended to write a consistent message. In doing so, he shows that one doesn't need to bend over backwards to see a coherency in Paul's thought.

    3) He interacts with an overwhelming number of scholarly commentaries on Romans, never afraid to explain opposing views and interact with them.

This is an ecxellent book and the author does an in-depth review of Paul's theology and a very good analysis using a textual criticism and surperb explanation of the original Greek language.

Excellent reference and footnotes. Rambles from the point of discussion occasionally--overall a valuable reference book. Recommend it for ones library.
