Shannon Malone thought she'd found her happy ending when she married Edmund Ridgeway, but a diving accident on their honeymoon left her in a coma. Waking up to the news that she's thirty years old would have been daunting enough . . . but she also learns that Edmund has lost his interim battle with cancer and the world has marched on without her. Her gorgeous doctor, Daniel Petros, seems to know everything about her and becomes Shannon's tour guide into a whole new world of madness where reality television has taken over the planet and everyone's life appears to revolve around a tiny screen on their cell phones!
As Shannon struggles to navigate through the changes-both in the world and in her-she also must discern real memories from imagined ones. Did she really ever wear capris pants and entertain in her living room, or was that Laura Petrie from her favorite classic TV show? And where is her beloved dog, Freeway? Oh, wait! That was Jonathan and Jennifer Hart's dog, not hers.
Shannon's three elderly aunts flit through her life in true Sleeping Beauty style with her well-being always a priority. And Edmund's sister Millicent descends like the Evil Queen she is, trying to extract Shannon from any claim on the Ridgeway family fortune. When a tornado moves through town and Shannon is knocked unconscious, will Daniel's kiss awaken her once and for all?
Four Star Review from Romantic Times!
"Bricker's latest is a delightful contemporary retelling of Sleeping Beauty with a sprinkle of humor and a dab of faith. Rise & Shine is a fun story with endearing characters who will bring a smile to your face. Readers who enjoy good chicklit --Christian or otherwise -- should try this one. Although the villain plays a minor role, it doesn't take away fromthe central storyline. And, last but not least, a McDreamy-type Prince Charming takes care of the sleeping beauty even though she's completely unaware of it. How's that for sweet and romantic?"
"Rise and Shine is a very clever retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It is witty, sad, very sweet and incredibly well written. I laughed and cried all the way through and I didn't want to put it down. Also as someone own is not a fan of Christian Fiction the religious aspects of this novel didn't drive me away from this book as it has in others. It was just a really good read." Bricker in her new book, Rise & Shine Book Two in the A Contemporary Fairy Tale series published by River North introduces us to Shannon Malone.
From the back cover: Right in the middle of an ordinary life, God throws in a fairy tale.
Shannon Malone awakes ten years after a diving accident to find that nothing in her previous life is the same. Waking up to the news that shes thirty years old would have been daunting enough . . . but she also learns that her young groom, Edmund, recently lost his battle with cancer.
Shannons elderly aunts flit through her life trying to save her from Millicent, Edmunds evil sister, as she tries to extract Shannon from any claim on the Ridgeway fortune. Shannons gorgeous doctor, Daniel Petros, becomes Shannons tour guide into a whole new world of madness where reality television has taken over the planet and everyones life appears to revolve around a tiny screen on their cellphones!
Can Shannon navigate to a happy ending even when her heart keeps asking, Why, God?
A 21st Century Sleeping Beauty. Well, not quite. All the ingredients seem to be there but they do not seem to come together the way a real fairy tale does. But then again Sandra D. Bricker does a wonderful job of getting all the events of the fairy tale together, three aunts, a Prince Charming and an evil sister-in-law but that is where this fairy tale stops. Shannon just woke up from a ten year coma to find the world she new has dramatically changed. She is an widowed heiress for one thing with an evil sister-in-law that wants to fight her on the family fortune. We move into our technological future slowly Shannon is thrown into it with great difficulty. This is a wonderful, charming romance and it is going to make you laugh. Ms. Bricker does an outstanding job of bringing her characters to life and you really want their romance to succeed. Maybe this does work as a fairy tale after all, you be the judge.

KateAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A modern twist on an old favorite.August 27, 2014KateAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I'm a lover of fairy tales...a known Disney princess fanatic...I have a Pinterest board to prove it. So, when a new twist on an old favorite comes along, I have to check it out.
I was not disappointed in Rise & Shine. I wondered how Sleeping Beauty could be told with a modern twist. Sandra figured out the perfect way to do it. It was a mix of Sleeping Beauty and Rip Van Winkle. It also showed the most realistic version of time travel. Being in a coma and waking up ten years later. It really brings attention to how much things can change, especially with the advances in technology.
When introduced to Shannon, she is a bubbly newlywed. Happy about life...except for the ending of her favorite TV show Friends. She is ready to concur the world, and her newlywed class at church with her husband. We don't get to really dive into the the old Shannon's life. We just get a brief glimpse. The Shannon we get to know is the girl who wakes up ten years later to a whole new world that has kept on moving without her.
Shannon deals with so many changes and has several blows dealt to her. And after having been out of it for ten years, she really doesn't remember who she was. Her memories are faded, so when she is able to start life again, after rehabbing, she is determined to find out what she wants to do, because who people keep telling her she was, just doesn't fit to who she thinks she is anymore.
It was an interesting story to think about while reading. What would some be like after waking up. How would they see everything with these new eyes. It was interesting to see it through Shannon's perspective.
There was a lot of humor through out the story, which was great, because this story could have easily have been a very serious and heart wrenching story. It has many sweet moments as well. Shannon's aunt Mary is a very chipper character that kept lightness to the book as it moved forward during what could have been heavier moments.
Daniel was very much the prince charming in the story. He cared for everyone and he made good on the promise he made to Shannon's late husband. He was a wonderful support for Shannon during her transitioning time. And in modern day style, he does goof up, but he is willing to learn from his mistakes.
This was a fun story to read. It was the perfect companion for me during my sick day. The only small thing about the story I noticed I wish was a little different was the ending. It wasn't bad, I enjoyed it, but it just seemed to end a little too quickly, but that could have just been me wanting know more about the afterwards of the characters.

RagdogsAge: Under 18Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Another Great One From Sandra!July 17, 2014RagdogsAge: Under 18Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Absolutely hysterical! I previously reviewed another book by Sandra called If the Shoe Fits which was a retelling of Cinderella. Rise and Shine is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, and was an amazing one at that! I loved the main characters, Shannon and Daniel, and the story was very well written. Shannon's personality makes the terrible trauma that she went through easy to read without getting depressed, of course we still care for her, and there are a few emotional scenes, but for the most part, you are laughing.
I loved how Daniel was such an amazing Christian. He thanked God for everything that happened, prayed before every decision, and even prayed with Shannon a few times. Though he wasn't perfect, he was still a great Christian roll-model.
If you liked If the Shoe Fits, or just funny books, I can almost promise that you will love this book!

Vrettos4 Stars Out Of 5Another fun read by Sandra D. BrickerJune 24, 2014VrettosQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5"Rise and Shine" by Sandra D. Bricker is a contemporary fairy tale that included elements of faith and subtle nods to "Sleeping Beauty," although the story was entirely original. I liked the concept of this book because I think it's pretty unique to Christian fiction. The two main characters were likable and had romantic tension. The middle of the book was a little slow, and it seemed like a lot of injuries/crises were used to move the plot forward at times, although I suppose that went along with the fairy tale theme. Overall, however, the book was a fun summer beach read that I would recommend. I have read several of the author's books and always enjoy her writing. Full disclosure: I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not told what to write, and all thoughts and comments about this work are my own.
