Publisher's Description

With a head more suited to bookkeeping than a bridal veil, Ida’s dreams include big business- not beaus.

Ida Sinclair has joined her sisters, Kat and Nell, in the untamed mining town of Cripple Creek, Colorado for one reason: to work for the infamous but undeniably successful businesswoman, Mollie O’Bryan. Ida’s sisters may be interested in making a match for their determined older sister, but Ida only wants to build her career.

Under Mollie's tutelage, Ida learns how to play the stock market and revels in her promising accomplishments. Fighting for respect in a man's world, her ambition leaves little room for distractions. She ignores her family's reservations about Mollie O'Bryan's business practices, but no matter how she tries, she can't ignore the two men pursuing her affections—Colin Wagner, the dashing lawyer, and Tucker Raines, the traveling preacher.

Ida wants a career more than anything else, so she shrugs off the suitors and pointed "suggestions" that young ladies don’t belong in business. Will it take unexpected love—or unexpected danger—for Ida to realize where her priorities truly lie?

Endorsements

“A beautiful tale. Intriguing. Inviting. Inspiring.” — Cindy Woodsmall author of The Hope of Refuge and When the Soul Mends

“It’s always a joy to read a historical novel that isn’t afraid to let its women escape the farm. In Too Rich for a Bride, Mona Hodgson invites her readers to the reunion of the Sinclair sisters from Two Brides Too Many when she brings the smart, business-minded Ida Sinclair to Cripple Creek—Colorado’s “city of opportunity.” This is a story that lets us stand on the cusp of a great societal shift—the entrance of women into the business world. With engaging characters and an intriguing plot, Hodgson doesn’t let the important historical backdrop overshadow the heart of the story. Cripple Creek’s cast of colorful characters play host to a new romance, as well as pulling back the curtain on a local family tragedy. This sequel does more than simply tell the “next” story; it revisits the characters we’ve already come to love and creates a complementary depth to an entertaining new tale.” — Allison Pittman author of Stealing Home and The Bridegrooms

“Ida believes her future is secure in a man’s world. After all, she has drive and determination. But what happens when she meets a man who makes a withdrawal from her heart? Author Mona Hodgson makes discovering the answer to this question a rich, rewarding adventure.” — DiAnn Mills author of A Woman Called Sage and the Texas Legacy Series

Ah, a book I’ve been waiting for. Too Rich for a Bride by Mona Hodgson will charm your socks off. All the ups and downs of a romance with a delightful dose of history with characters that will sneak into your heart and take up residence. More, more, we want more.” — Lauraine Snelling author of No Distance Too Far and the Daughters of Blessing series

“Mona Hodgson has done it again. With deft storytelling and characters that leap off the page, Too Rich for a Bride is a book I won't soon forget.” — Kathleen Y’Barbo author of The Confidential Life of Eugenia Cooper and Anna Finch and the Hired Gun

Publisher's Weekly

Hodgson is a prolific children's book author who has also contributed to 11 books for adults. Her second 1890s western romance continues the story of the four Sinclair sisters (following Two Brides Too Many). Ida Sinclair is passionate about only one thing: succeeding in the business world. When she graduates from business school and a professor propositions her, she promptly moves away to Cripple Creek, Colo., where her sisters Kat and Nell live. Ida lands a job with business owner Mollie O'Bryan, learning how to play the stock market. Life seems pretty near perfect until Ida must choose between the town's new iceman/preacher, Tucker Raines, and Colin Wagner, a lawyer. Investing in the stock market comes easily for Ida, but not so making her heart's choice. Fun and lighthearted, Hodgson's work provides a breezy feel-good read. I enjoyed this book and I think there is a lesson to be learned from it: sometimes, even if we do not like it, we need to be open to what others think of our actions. As Christians, we have a responsibility to reflect the image of Christ in our lives and wrong actions can be harmful to our testimony.

Too Rich For A Bride is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series. You don’t need to read the first to enjoy this one. They flow well together but can be read independently.

This book is about Ida and her quest to stay single and build her career. The book is set in the late 1800’s so did feel sometimes that the story was a little ahead of itself in the character’s independence.

Ida comes to town and begins working for a local businesswoman, Mollie O’Bryan. She gains respect in a man’s world while also earning her own money. While she may not be looking for love, it is looking for her. With two suitors seeking her attention and some unexpected adventure she has a very busy life.

Will she choose the lawyer or the preachers? Will she keep her money or lose it? Read the book and find out!

Too Rich for a Bride by Mona Hodgson is the follow-up novel to her Two Brides Too Many. Ida Sinclair joins her sisters in Cripple Creek, Colorado with aspirations of becoming a successful businesswoman. Thinking she has no time (or need) for men, she is surprised when two eligible bachelors begin vying for her attention.

Hodgson produces a great historical fiction. The town of Cripple Creek is interesting the men and women who live there are true characters. Mona writes each character in such a way that they seem to be real people. I also enjoyed that although this is the second novel in the series, it truly stands alone. I loved the characters of Kat and Nell and look forward to reading their story in Two Brides Too Many. My only complaint was that the romantic connections in this book seemed a bit forced. However, the rest of the book made up for it. This is a charming series and I look forward to the final installment.

I received a free copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Today I'm reviewing TOO RICH FOR A BRIDE by Mona Hodgson, published by Waterbrook. This is the second book in the Cripple Creek series.

In the 1890's, women were expected to marry, keep a fine home, and raise children. But some women have always fought against the mold and Hodgson's heroine, Ida Sinclair, is one of those. After taking business courses, she aspires to be a successful businesswoman in the east. After a nearly disastrous false start that leaves her disillusioned about working for a man, she comes west to join her sisters in Colorado, where she lands a job with a somewhat notorious businesswoman there whose success seems based on an 1890's version of insider trading.

Tucker Raines is a former traveling preacher who must give up his ministry to take on his family's ice business when his father falls ill with TB. Tucker's father has always been harsh to him because he chose the ministry, which causes Tucker hidden pain. He is taken with Ida, but hesitant because she seems to prefer material goals over marriage and family. And then there's the too-smooth businessman wooing her.

The story of how Ida learns that love is really what is valuable in life, how she gains discernment into character, and how Tucker regains his true calling and the love and respect of his father is a tender, heartwarming story. I had not read the first book in the series, TWO BRIDES TOO MANY, but I'm thinking I need to!

This book was provided free for my review by Waterbrook Press in the Blogging for Books program.

Ida Sinclair, resolved to prove her merit as a businesswoman, took her determination to Cripple Creek, Colorado. Faced with the bias and discrimination of the late 1800s, her success was surprising. Her sisters and others were supportive, but could foresee possible negative consequences. With a firm focus and dedication she achieves greater success than she expected…. But at what cost?

The story is dramatically written, with wonderful descriptions, a variety of believable characters, and a sweet story. To Rich for a Bride will touch your emotions and fill your heart with a smile.
