Publisher's Description

When you talk to God, do you ever feel as if you are not getting through?

You're not alone. At some point, most believers find themselves grappling with difficult questions like Would God really talk to me personally? and How do I know it's truly God talking, and not my own thoughts?

But here's the good news: Hearing God is simpler than you think.

It's possible to have a relationship with God that involves both speaking and listening. In fact, it's God's desire; He wants to talk to you.

In this revised and expanded edition of a classic work, author and teacher Steve Sampson shows you how to pray not just wishing you'd hear God's voice--but expecting to hear it.

Sampson's uncomplicated, practical perspective will help you cultivate the two-way conversation with God you've always longed for. Before long, you'll hear Him speaking into your circumstances and relationships, expressing His love for you and showing you the next steps to take in your life.

Don't settle for a one-sided conversation with God.

Break through this barrier and develop a sensitive heart that hears--and responds to--God's still, small voice.

"With clarity and humor, Steve takes you on a journey to the place of profound simplicity in Christ where hearing Him is as natural as breathing."--Bishop Mark J. Chironna, M.A., Ph.D., Church on the Living Edge, Orlando, Florida

I must admit that when I received this free copy from the publisher, I rolled my eyes and threw it on the desk for a later date. After reading other books related to this topic, how different could this book really be? I decided that my book review would be about that - how it differs from other books on this topic. I picked up this book with hesitancy, but once I started reading it, my opinion changed substantially.

This book by Steve Sampson was full of thought provoking ideas, personal stories, and useful analogies that I could relate to. He made the statement that if you ever had an idea out of the blue, but before you have the chance to say anything, your spouse makes the comment first - that's Holy intervention. If you think of someone you haven't seen or heard from in years and the next day that person calls or stops by - that's Holy intervention. God puts thoughts in our heads just as much as His adversary does. The only difference is that God wants to have a conversation. He will answer our prayers in the literal sense, but it's not always a cut and dry answer.

One very important thing I have learned from this book helped me immensely with the way I pray. I stopped talking to God like He was only listening when I prayed because He is with me every minute of every day. I stopped asking for things in my life because He already knows what I need. Asking God for money is pointless, but asking Him to provide me the opportunity to find work or make money is worth asking for.

The biggest thing that stops people from hearing God is their own conscience. When you want something so bad and the opportunity comes up to have it, it does not necessarily mean it's God's will. People forget to ask for guidance because they are driven by their own agenda. This book helps how to differentiate between what we want and what God has in store for us.

This book is definitely not what I expected and it goes to show that you can't judge a book before you pick it up and read it. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to read this book and share my thoughts about it. I highly recommend this book and would encourage those who are skeptics to read it. Not only will I read this again, but I will read it with a highlighter because there are so many points Steve makes that deserve it. I live my life to be a better person and a better Christian. Everyday I am reminded of how much of the Gospel I still have yet to learn. You can read a book to read it, but it doesn't absorb until you study it. Thank you Steve for reminding me and encouraging me to pray while listening and studying while reading.

"You Can Hear the Voice of God" by Steve Samson is a clearly laid out book talking about all the ways God "talks" to us. They aren't always burning bush moments. Far from it. Usually it's a nudge or a sudden thought out of nowhere. Each chapter in this book outlines a different way in which God speaks to His kids, what to expect, what it might mean and how to make the most of it.

In one part, Mr. Samson points out that most Christians "miss the supernatural because they are waiting for the spectacular." So true. If you have it in your head that God can't possibly be talking to you because gold dust isn't falling from the ceiling, than you're going to miss out on a thousand conversations with the Loving Creator of Everything. I spent years, YEARS of my life telling God my grocery list instead of conversing with Him. What a tragedy. It doesn't have to be the same with you though. You, right now can start this incredible journey and this book will definitely help.

I enjoyed this book and think it should be read by everyone. It started out well enough and then just when it started to lose my interest, picked up in a big way so stay with it. I find myself quoting this book numerous times a day. That in itself has to tell you something. I've been consumed by this subject lately (meaning I've read many books on the topic.) If it had been the first one I'd read on the subject, I would be saying absolutely nothing but glowing remarks. If you haven't read a single book on how to hear from God, this is a great place to start.

    God Bless.

BTW, I got a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sampson believes that Christians do, in fact, hear the voice of God but they just have not been taught to recognize it. Christians who are in intimate conversation with the Holy Spirit are a threat to the devil so he will cause obstruction any way he can.

God speaks to His people and wants to speak through them, Sampson writes. He has identified ten ways the Holy Spirit speaks to us. After reading this book and the principles contained in it, he says Christians will learn to hear the voice of God. He writes, ...hearing from God should be normal and commonplace for Christians.

He starts out by explaining what keeps us from hearing God's voice. He includes attitudes like being opinionated or critical. He explains how we can distinguish our thoughts from God's. For example, ...when the Lord wants to speak to our spirit, He overrides our reasoning process.

The ways the Spirit speaks to us Sampson gives will be familiar to charismatic Christians. They include words of knowledge, dreams, visions, pictures (similtudes), thoughts in the mind, peace (or lack of it). He includes lots of stories, mostly his own, how one operates in these various ways of hearing God.

He also includes some instruction regarding what to do once we have heard God's voice, seen a picture, etc. He includes a good section on interpreting dreams. He is also quite clear that hearing the voice of God is not always so easy. In recognizing the witness of the Spirit, we need to discern between our emotions and the mind of the Spirit. Learning to recognize the difference between our soul and spirit is a process. As we become more confident in recognizing the Spirit, we will become more sensitive to receiving direction from the Lord. He gives several keys and practical instruction for doing so.

He reminds us, Thank God for the written Word, because it is a safeguard against heresy and against those who claim they have heard God and are running with some 'new' doctrine.

This book is a general introduction for new believers about hearing God's voice. It is also a reminder to older Christians that God does want a relationship with us that includes communication on both sides. There is nothing on God's side keeping that communication from happening.

The only part of the book that I am hesitant about is his section in the creative word. Sampson writes, When God speaks to us, whatever He says is already a reality, regardless of what our natural eyes see and our circumstances declare. I can't tell you how many times people have thought God told them something, they acted on it despite evidence to the contrary, and the situation went horribly wrong. Sampson has already said that accurately learning to recognize the voice of God is a process. I think there should have been some caution added to this section.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
