Rethinking God: Undoing the Damage transcends the cultural divide by exposing common distortions of the great, grieving lover. It unmasks Evangelical misrepresentations, but also challenges non-Christians to rethink their own positions. The book starts by establishing the nature and validity of faith. Then come key areas that most often damage God's reputation: Church leadership, practice, and political involvement; distorted theology; the problem of evil; and the fate of people who never hear the gospel. Dr. Munger challenges Christians to reform, and gives honest seekers reason and courage to look again at the beauty of humanity's source and only hope.

DR. MUNGER CHALLENGES READERS TO RETHINK THEIR CONCEPT OF GOD.
After twenty years of focused overseas, an American missionary looks home.
Dr.Scott Munger applies to his own people, especially to fellow evangelicals, his experience in culture, language, and the Bible. Their often distorted picture of God saddens him. The loving One who woos humanity, the sovereign One who chooses to risk and be wounded, is wrongly perceived on both sides of a growing cultural rift. God is often seen as an omnipotent egotist and angry legalist, brooding plotter, agent of hucksters and buffoons, an irksome meddler. His image, dark and contorted, is becoming increasingly unlovable. We who claim to follow Him do much harm-His "name is blasphemed among the Gentiles" because of us (Romans 2:24).
Rethinking God: Undoing the Damage transcends the cultural divide by exposing common distortions of the great, grieving lover. The book starts by establishing the nature and validity of faith. Firsthand stories from the former USSR vividly portray atheism as the foil. Later, key areas are introduced that most often damage God's reputation: church leaderships, practice, and political involvement; distorted theology; the problem of evil; the fate of people who never hear the gospel; and our understanding of Jesus, Ultimately, Dr. Munger challenges Christians to sift their unquestioned assumptions, and he gives honest reason and courage to look again at the beauty of humanity's source and only hope.
DR. SCOTT MUNGER is a former agnostic who came to faith in God. He trained in both science and the humanities (Ph.D., Linguistics, Free University of Amsterdam, Netherlands). He has lived and worked in a rough-and-tumble world, from the guerilla-tracked Philippine rain forest to the concrete jungle of the collapsing Soviet Union. Dr. Munger has served as missionary, consultant, Bible translator, church leader, teacher, and administrator. He has taught (university, seminary, and church) in three languages. An avowed Evangelical, Scott is a retired member of Wycliffe Bible Translators, and a former Vice President of International Bible Society. He has discussed religious issues on radio, CNN, and Fox News.
Van Duitsman5 Stars Out Of 5March 17, 2009Van DuitsmanOn rare occasions there comes a book of such quality & importance that a mere recommendation to friends and family is just not good enough... Get yourself a stack of these and start handing them out! This book is a fantastic response to the most important questions not only of our time, but of all time... Well researched, well documented, well thought out... Life changing. Thank you so much, Scott Munger, for the blood, sweat, tears & years that you've invested to make this book available.
Amy Forsline5 Stars Out Of 5September 1, 2007Amy ForslineThis is a very real and thought provoking book. I highly reccomend it to both christians and non alike. Scott does a great job of weaving in his personal stories/history with doctronal knowledge. I so appreciated his honesty in sharing personal stories of growing up in a disfunctional family. Real and gut wrenching. He experienced suffering in a way most will never know. This, along with the fact that Dr. Munger has lived for years in 3rd world countries as a missionary and Bible translator; make him highly credible and justified in making claims about God's misrepresentation around the world. I didn't doubt him a bit on how God's reputation has been marred. It makes one think about how they live out their Christian life amongst those who hate God, or just want nothing to do with Him. Scared me in a healthy way. I want to give a copy to my friends and relatives who are non-believers. It will be a great tool in sharing the gospel, especially for those of us who are not good at that! The book engages and answers questions most don't want to raise. It's a book that does not sound all "churchy." What a relief in a sea of christian books that want to easily explain things they can't. A tough read for those who want "light and easy," but what a welcome!
