Modern mission theory is guided largely by the "three self paradigm" that suggests indigenous churches can only be healthy if they are "self-governing, self-propagating, and self-supporting." Consequently, Western missionaries, their churches, and their agencies have been increasingly indisposed to giving generously. We must rethink the interplay of dollars dependency and what it means to "do the right thing" with our money as we pursue twenty-first century missions.
This book answers the questions whether Westerners ought "to give or not to give" in support of global evangelism and encourages maximum generosity as the path most reflective of God's heart on the matter.

Jayme Hightower5 Stars Out Of 5July 19, 2007Jayme HightowerTo Give or Not to Give: Rethinking Dependency, Restoring Generosity, and Redefining Sustainability (which is the real title of the book) is one of the best books on global evangelism that I've ever read. Dr. Rowell speaks to the American heart in a way like no other. If we, the most affluent in the world, choose not to give to those living on so little, who will help them? I know there are those who believe it's better to help by encouraging nationals to use the resources they have to support themselves. However, I believe it is only right to teach them how to use what they have to help themselves. If no one teaches, no one gets anywhere, and everyone keeps making the same mistakes. Thank you, Dr. Rowell, for encouraging America to continue to give with hearts that are open and giving and also with no ulterior motives. Thank you for encouraging us to give, not to have control or lord over other, but because that is what Jesus would do and asked us to do as well.
