Product Description

Within a progressive feminist framework, The Resurrection of Mary Magdalene approaches Christian Testament sources through analysis of legend, archeology, and gnostic/apocryphal traditions.

Schaberg's comprehensive and unconventional work exposes multiple strategies of suppression of the memory of Mary Magdalene. These are traced, from the unfinished excavations at Migdal (Magdala), to the conflation and distortion that produce legends, to the diminishment and erasure in much contemporary scholarship of the women at the cross and tomb. A set of interlocking possibilities about the basileia movement of Jesus and his companions brings these women into new focus.

Alongside the strategies of suppresion, constant resistance is seen. Extensive analysis of the gnostic/apocryphal material, especially the Gospel of Mary, provides access to that resistance. The work concludes with a reading of John 20 ("Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended...") in the light of Jewish merkavah mysticism and the Elijah/Elisha succession narrative. Mary Magdalene is presented as successsor to Jesus in a powerful alternative to the Petrine primlacy.

Virginia Woolf is Schaberg's conversation partner, providing from time to time an encouraging, skeptical, and politically savvy voice. Schaberg makes use of Woolf's insights, such as those into structures of domination and the Society of Outsiders, her explorations of androgyny and communality. Woolf's mysticism is seen as important and central. Both Biblical Studies and Woolf Studies benefit from this collaboration.

A work of controversial and creative scholarship.
