Publisher's Description

A strange and wonderous friendship ignites the fire of love in May Seymour's life.

Lovely and winsome May Seymour graduated from college with the world at her feet...and no idea what to do with it. A spontaneous mission trip to Africa brought great surprise--love--and a strong sense of purpose. But in loving others there, she encountered a severe tragedy that left her deeply wounded.

She comes to heal at the farm of Claudius Borne--a sweet, kind old man who understands plants and animals far better than people. And his farm becomes May's home.

There on the farm, May renews a friendship with an old college flame named Eli whose path has taken unexpected turns too. As May tries to convince Eli to grab hold of life once again, he begins to pull May from her sheltered existence. Like old Claudius's farm in Spring, May begins to blossom back into life. But no resurrection ever comes without sacrifice--and this sacrifice will forever transform May.

Resurrection in May by Lisa Samson is about May Seymour, a college-age girl who makes a strong connection with an older man right before she leaves for a long journey to Rwanda. The book covers quite a large span of May Seymour’s life and, although the story is packed with loss and grief, in the end readers see that the main character is truly at peace.

In the book’s beginning, the author does not go into much detail about back story or character motivation. Samson does, however, produce a very heartwarming story of the relationship this young college girl and Claudius the old farmer have created. May’s first major problem arises when she is caught in the middle of the genocide in Rwanda, and watches as everyone in her town gets slaughtered. This is the most memorable scene in the book, and author Samson is vivid in her description of the violence and mayhem, revealing graphically how devastating this inhumane situation is. Later in the book when Claudius dies, May is faced with another heart breaking situation. It is not the last time we see her go through pain, but it is the key turning point of the book. May’s personality is very vibrant and domineering in the beginning of the book; however, we see a major change in her behavior once she arrives back on the farm from Rwanda. As the story concludes, she has learned what it means to be a God-fearing woman.

Overall, this book tells a very personal and deeply-moving story. I liked the unique relationships the characters developed with each other. Most importantly, in the end readers are left with a sense of peace. I think this book would captivate women fifteen years old and older. The only reason I would not recommend it for girls younger would be because of all the traumatic death scenes throughout the story.

Psalm 34: 18 says, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” By the end of the book May has defiantly been “crushed in spirit,” but it is evident that the Lord has been by her side helping her get through all her pain and suffering. It is a great theme that really helps readers understand the greatness of God’s love for those who are hurting. – Makenna Dunkelberger, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Publisher's Weekly

God would permit evil--in this tale of a mildly dissolute but open-hearted young woman, May Seymour, whose mission trip to Rwanda shows her humanity at its most basic. Despite a warning, she remains in her village and is the only survivor of the genocidal onslaught. She returns to a Kentucky farm whose owner, Claudius Borne, extended paternal hospitality to her before her trip. She remains there for years in the grip of post-traumatic agoraphobia. The plot turns when May learns that college boyfriend Eli Campbell is on death row, and the two renew their acquaintance. Samson is bold as ever, exploring big questions through her vivid writing and memorable characters. But the plot creaks mechanically at points in this outing, with some key episodes and secondary characters not developed enough to reel the reader in. Eli's daughter Callie is unconvincing, and the exchange of letters between the imprisoned Eli and May is a little heavy-handed. Samson gets high marks for imagination and ambition, but points off for flaws in execution. (Aug.) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

Resurrection in May is a book full of raw emotions and deep hurt. The beginning is quite light-hearted and Samson's brilliant character development soon has you in love with May, Claudius and their day to day life on Claudius' farm. The book, however, soon takes a turn into dark territory, where the war between the Tutsi and Hutu peoples is just beginning. Wow, what a punch! May's journey from hurt, to forgiveness, to a new life and dependance on God is one that is well worth the read and I recommend that you do!

next book i have is Resurrection in may by Lisa Samson. wasn't quite sure what to expect, since i haven't read any books by Lisa at all. so i kinda went into it blindly. the cover drew me in though because its so mysterious. and the book wasn't at all anything i would have expected. as you can tell by the description it kinda goes all over the place.

it did tend to be kinda confusing at times. with the different parts its almost like 3 books in one. it was really good though once i finally got a chance to sit down and read it, it went pretty fast. it was a pretty amazing and insane story though. so heartbreaking but uplifting at the same time. i would definitely recommend this author amazing writing here..

Resurrection in May by Lisa Samson is now one of my top 5 favorite Christian fiction books. I have read many Christian fiction authors but have never read anything by Lisa Samson before. Since reading this I have sought out her books. In Resurrection in May she does such a beautiful job of bringing the characters to life and getting the reader attached, certainly this reader at least. May, Claudius, Eli and Sister Ruth are all characters I'd like to meet if they were real. The story of May's journey from being a pleasant but shallow college student with little ambition, to taking a mission trip to Africa that taught her love, selflessness and purpose but came with great pain and loss, is full of rich characters, descriptive and diverse landscapes and caries you along wanting to protect and push May forward depending on the page.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and didn't want to put it down yet didn't want the story to end. My favorite setting was that of Claudius' farm in Kentucky and my favorite character was Claudius himself. The author made him appealing in all the right ways, kind, honest, loyal, patient and unselfish. We all need at least one Claudius in our lives. His strong faith and genuine trust in God was just what May needed to find her way back from fear to love, life and hope. The story takes a few unexpected turns but each of them believable and revealing in their wisdom and inspiration. I would highly recommend this book and have already loaned it out to a friend who loved it as much as I did.I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com

Resurrection in May is written by Lisa Samson. This was the first book that I've read by her. I really enjoyed this book. It was a very interesting read and really held my attention. May Seymour is a young college girl, who seemed to have it all. An "accidental" meeting of an old bachelor man, Claudius Borne, changes her life. May leaves for a mission trip to Africa and there experiences much pain, tragedy and heartache. She returns to Claudius' farm to try to find healing for her life. Here she indeed finds healing, friendship and love..but she doesn't find it easily.I did enjoy this book and look forward to reading other books by this author.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksneeze.com in return for my honest review.

Resurrection in May is a gripping saga and one I couldn't put down. Rich in characterization and description, Lisa Samson is a master storytellerone of the best. It's slightly different than her usual literary style, but Resurrection in May retains the intense beauty Samson is known for in her writing. A must read. Novel Journey and I give it a high recommendation.
