Product Description

If you've ever committed to a diet, exercise, or ministry plan, you've probably realized that it's much easier to start something than to finish it. At a young age, Gordon MacDonald recognized that he had inherited a "quitter's gene," and because of this and an influential track coach, he began a lifelong quest for answers. "Why," he asked, "do some people finish what they start, persevere in moments of adversity, push themselves in the direction of their potential, and often make their greatest contributions in the latter half of life?" The key element in those who don't quit is resilience. Those who have it, MacDonald insists, have gathered all the lessons from life, both successes and failures, to build a foundation of strength and character. Using examples from the Bible, from his own life, and from the lives of contemporary people, MacDonald identifies the characteristics of resilience and leads you with encouragement through the process needed to develop them.

Publisher's Description

ôIt makes little difference how fast you can run the 100 meters when the race isá400 meters long. Life is not a sprint; it is a distance run, and it demands the kind ofáconditioning that enables people to go the distance.ö
ùGordon MacDonald

Running Strong

Whose heart doesnÆt leap at the sight of a beautifully
conditioned runner, effortlessly gliding along, stride-bystride,ámile-by-mile? And what runner gets to this place withoutáa thanklessùand often lonelyùregimen of strategy and self-denial?

IsnÆt this the perfect metaphor of what your heart is longing forùrunningálifeÆs race with intentionality and grace? With strength and focus?

Well, you can. Veteran pastor and best-selling author Gordon MacDonaldásays you must develop resilienceùthe courage and ability to get up when you fall,áto keep running when youÆre bone-weary, and to keep your eye on the goal even ináthe murkiest moments. Using the backdrop of his own experiences as a championárunner, MacDonald demonstrates how resilient people

  • Practice spiritual self-discipline to build stamina and grit;
  • Know whatÆs up ahead, what obstacles they will likely face; and
  • Bond with special friends who share their commitment to finishing well.
Because he has also run many long, punishing laps in the tough race of life,áMacDonald is uniquely qualified to coach and encourage you in developing thatáresilient spiritùto weather adversity, to finish what you start, and to never beásatisfied with anything short of GodÆs best for you.

    My wife and I have known Gordon and his wife for many years and we know that he is speaking truth with integrity in this book. In our leadership training small group we have selected this book as being the best book on leadership to read and absorb. One member of the group gave a copy of the book as a Christmas gift to his employer. His employer, in turn, was so impressed by what Gordon has written that he purchased copies to give to all his employees.

    Excellent practical and enjoyable to read. It helped my husband and I with concrete steps to "finishing well" The challenge to "fight the good fight" all the way to the end is daunting. McDonald's insights were so useful we are not using this book in a small group discussion

    "A Resilient Life" gives the reader an encouragment to pursue excellence in his/her Christian Life. It is a book geared for the Christian who is serious in living for God. It is practical and MacDonald approaches his topic with a conversational style that makes you evaluate yourself and he lets you see what he is thinking. Its a great book! As a pastor, this has motivated me not only to get back up when I fall but to run with resilience and dedication for God.
