Many think of ambition as nothing more than the drive for personal honor or fame. As a result, ambitionthe God-implanted drive to improve, produce, develop, and createis neglected and well on its way to paralysis.
For some, dreams are numbed. For others, there are no dreams; life just happens. And for those who are dreaming, motives are often confused. One thing is certain: ambition needs help.
Dave Harvey is calling for a rescue. He wants to snatch ambition from the heap of failed motivations and put it to work for the glory of God. To understand our ambition, we must understand that we are on a quest for glory. And where we find glory determines the success of our quest.
Has your God-given ambition been starved and sedated for too long? Are you ambitious? Its time to reach further and dream bigger for the glory of God.
I was delightfully surprised by Rescuing Ambition. I was actually reluctant to read it at first, expecting a defense of personal ambition that was rooted in American cultural values and supported by Scriptures that never quite supported the author's contention. What I found instead was a well-thought-out, God-centered book that challenged and encouraged me to rethink my own thoughts about this topic.
Dave Harvey cites the likes of Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, and John Piper -- which obviously brings credibility to his arguments -- as he systematically develops a framework for a biblical perspective on ambition. After laying a foundation of gospel-shifting values, he addresses all the questions I've asked myself over the years: How does ambition relate to humility? Can I be ambitious in my career and ambitious for the Kingdom at the same time? What's happening in my heart when I begin feeling less ambitious than I have in the past? In each chapter, Harvey seems to anticipate my questions and is ready to respond with biblical answers.
I especially liked his discussion of faith and ambition. He makes a well-reasoned case that godly ambition finds its focus in faith thats where biblical ambition finds its character and purpose. I had not linked God's sovereignty and my confidence in His purposes in my life with ambition in such a direct manner and I found this very helpful.
I found Harvey's style easy to read and enjoyable. He comes across as very genuine and someone I'd like to spend time with. At the same time he writes with authority and communicates that he is someone who has something to say. Halfway through the book I stopped to see what else he's written and have already purchased another one of his books, perhaps the best commentary on what I thought of this one!
