Ambition needs to be rescued and put to work for God's glory. This book will encourage and embolden believers to pursue their dreams with a godly ambition that seeks more for God and from God.
Dave Harvey (DMin, Westminster Theological Seminary) is the pastor of preaching at Four Oaks Community Church in Tallahassee, Florida. Dave has over 25 years of pastoral experience and has traveled nationally and internationally teaching Christians, equipping pastors, and training church planters. He served on the Sovereign Grace Ministries Leadership Team for 17 years and continues to serve on the board of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF). Dave is the author of Am I Called?, Rescuing Ambition, When Sinners Say I Do, as well as a contributing author toWorldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World.
C. J. Mahaney is the senior pastor of Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville. He has written, edited and contributed to numerous books, including Proclaiming a Cross-Centered Theology; Don't Waste Your Sports; and Sex, Romance and the Glory of God. C. J. and his wife, Carolyn, are the parents of three married daughters and one son, and the happy grandparents to twelve grandchildren.
Dave Harvey cites the likes of Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, and John Piper -- which obviously brings credibility to his arguments -- as he systematically develops a framework for a biblical perspective on ambition. After laying a foundation of gospel-shifting values, he addresses all the questions I've asked myself over the years: How does ambition relate to humility? Can I be ambitious in my career and ambitious for the Kingdom at the same time? What's happening in my heart when I begin feeling less ambitious than I have in the past? In each chapter, Harvey seems to anticipate my questions and is ready to respond with biblical answers.
I especially liked his discussion of faith and ambition. He makes a well-reasoned case that godly ambition finds its focus in faith thats where biblical ambition finds its character and purpose. I had not linked God's sovereignty and my confidence in His purposes in my life with ambition in such a direct manner and I found this very helpful.
I found Harvey's style easy to read and enjoyable. He comes across as very genuine and someone I'd like to spend time with. At the same time he writes with authority and communicates that he is someone who has something to say. Halfway through the book I stopped to see what else he's written and have already purchased another one of his books, perhaps the best commentary on what I thought of this one!
