Identity Crisis! Leona Harper has no identity of her own. Sheâs been a small town pastorâs wife for almost thirty years. Sheâs poured everything into being the best helpmeet for her husband, until the day JD drops dead in the pulpit. When the well-meaning parishioners (and some not so well-meaning) gather round, her caustic mother comes to comfort(?) her, and her resentful adult children arrive to say goodbye to their beloved father, Leona puts on the mask sheâs always worn. She helps arrange the funeral meal and makes sure everything is running smoothly. After all, this is what a pastorâs wife does. But the chairman of the church board is in a hurry to replace JD, and what will that do to Leona? Will she be forced out of the dilapitated parsonage before sheâs ready? Who will be the new pastor? And does Leona have any marketable skills of her own? It all boils down to, who is Leona? Once upon a time a friend told me of a woman whoâs husband was a pastor, but the woman didnât âfeel calledâ to be a pastorâs wife. How could that be? Wasnât this one of those career paths (callings, if you will) that requires a couple to be on the same page? And yet, why? Is someone married to a banker âcalledâ to be a bankerâs wife? Does it matter if she is? In Reinventing Leona, the author employs a wry voice as she explores the death of Leonaâs husband AND her calling. Though it is a story of coping with loss, the tone is far from morbid. Youâll find yourself rooting for Leona as she struggles to figure out who she really is. October 5, 2011

Have you hugged your pastor's wife today? Most Pastorâs wives lead lives of quiet desperation. I know, thatâs not an exact quote from Thoreau, but I am certain of its application in this instance. Churches are full of people, and when you lead people (especially the people that the church accepts - with divergent pasts, agendas, and interests -whose leadership has the arduous task of pointing them in a single direction) the pastor, and by virtue of their relationship to him, his family, are under significant pressure to live, act, and be a certain way. In Reinventing Leona, Lynne Gentry gives a portrait of a pastorâs wife who has more than accepted her role, indeed she has excelled at her occupation of support and love to a congregation her husband pastors. When her husband suddenly dies, though, Leona is forced to examine the relationships she has with the congregants, the town, her adult children, and her mother. As she does that, she comes to realize certain perceptions she has held have been less than Christian. The ending leaves the possibility for a sequel open, and I for one, would love to read that! This is a story that will grab you, and if it does nothing else â hopefully it will enable you to feel differently about your pastorâs wife and children. A hint here â they, too, are human, and have no special empowerment to be perfect, so when you expect that of them, it is not only unfair, it creates the impression that they arenât loved and appreciated just as they are. So, the next time you see her, give your pastorâs wife a hug, and let her know that you love her in Jesusâ name, just the way God made her. Tell us a little about yourself. Wife. Mother. Author. Pastor's wife. Most pastor's wives feel everyone is watching them. My theater training has taught me to watch you. I love detecting a twitch of an eyebrow, arms crossed, or a shuffling of the feet. Who knows, you could be just the character I'm looking for.

What was your motivation behind this project? I watched three friends lose their husbands. Two of them regrouped, reinvented, and went on to live rejoicing lives. One shriveled up and died in a nursing home within a year. Their experiences caused me to ask what if tragedy struck me? Would I get up or curl up?

What do you hope folks will gain from this project? It's NEVER too late to start over. You can reinvent yourself, whether it is for a different career or for an improved relationship. Things can change.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Little did I know writing this story would prepare me to face a devastating change in my life. Two years ago my husband lost his job. With all of the financial security pillars knocked out from under us, we've had to work to reinvent our lives. And I'm happy to report that we have. I believe you can too.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? The Bible. God's word offers the reassurance I need to put one foot in front of the other. I'm an eclectic reader. Love everything from Roman history to a good love story.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I love to walk in the park, drink a good cup of coffee with my husband, and have lunch and laughs with good friends.
