Regret Free Parenting: Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing It Right by Catherine Hickem is a book that teaches from the negative to the positive. Most parenting books provide checklists and lesson strategies on how to rear confident and well-adjusted youngsters. This book, however, offers case histories and profiles of parents (particularly mothers) who do a lousy job of nurturing their offspring and then proceeds to explain ways in which these circumstances could be avoided or, if already manifested, turned around. Hickem is a professional counselor who has worked in private practice, has counseled women in prison, and was the founder of Intentional Moms Ministry.

The book is sectioned into seven parts. Section Three focuses on ways to find peace when a child is going through the teenage years. Hickem explains that the brain is still forming during these years and, as a result, it does things impulsively, doesn't recognize potential danger, has trouble getting organized and setting appropriate priorities, and cannot estimate possible consequences of actions taken. As a result, parents have to be forgiving but also attentive and protective to some degree. If the teen sees that the parent is there for encouragement, advice, and direction, rather than just admonishment and disapproval, the parent-teen relationship will be more amiable.

One key aspect of all parenting, says Hickem, is to maintain a healthy sense of humor. She also is in favor of mentoring and befriending moms who are incarcerated, ill, or highly stressed. At first, these women will be defensive, with high walls around their hearts. But the minute you ask them to tell you about their children, they will either smile or cry, and either way an avenue of ministry is opened.

Hickem tells many anecdotes about her own children and she quotes passages of Scripture that help children deal with complicated situations. One time, her daughter was having a hard time with a classmate who was calling her names and making her life difficult. Hickem suggested they read Psalm 55 aloud and discuss it. The daughter discovered in these verses that God understood what persecution felt like, but He also wanted His children to strive to live in peace by offering forgiveness to offenders.

This book is not heavy psychology, but it is pragmatic. It provides foundational insights on rearing children from a biblical perspective and in a non-jargon readable way. – Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

While I do not believe that we can survive parenthood "regret-free" no matter how good the advice given, I do believe that being intentional in our daily lives with our children will help to bring about many of the desires we long for in them. Regret Free Parenting by Catherine Hickem helps mothers to focus on seven principles that will keep them intentional in how they raise their children. Hickem addresses understanding your purpose as a mother, knowing and affirming your child, being a vision keeper, developing emotional intelligence, maintaining your position, addressing your fears, and being God-dependent.

I read this book back in the summer and turned over many page corners to mark important points to review. Looking back, some of those points do not seem as vital now, but other comments and ideas stand out as needing my attention. I can see this book being a valuable resource for many years and will be one I return to again and again - especially the chapter entitled You Can Live Peacefully in the Teenage Years.

Much of what Hickem has to say is common sense and will not be new. However, many of those common sense ideas and principles were like a gentle reminder or a slap in the head to get back in the game and be present and intentional with my children. Time flies when you are parenting and the precious years we have to be with our children will be over before we realize they are out of elementary school! I highly recommend Regret Free Parenting as a resource to encourage you along the journey of caring for the treasure God has entrusted to you.

I give this book 5 stars out of 5.

Every mother wonders if they are doing a good enough job. We would all love a step-by-step plan laid out for us to follow. Catherine, a licensed psychotherapist and mother, offers seven principles to help encourage, teach and inspire us to raise our children without regrets:

Chapter 1 - Why Well - Meaning Moms Raise Insecure Kids.

Chapter 2 - Why Good Kids Don't Feel Good.

Chapter 3 - You Can Live Peacefully in the Teenage Years.

    Chapter 4 - Become a Thinking Mom.

Chapter 5 - Respect is Necessary, Happiness is Not.

Chapter 6 - The Difference Between Control and Intention.

Chapter 7 - God's Sense of Humor Begins with Contractions.

Catherine has observed, and counselled, countless mothers and many families. Her perspective as a Christian is encouraging. Her advice will reassure readers and give them confidence.

In today's society, we are often confused by mixed messages in raising our children. We are struggling with an ever - changing culture, and are being offered a myriad of advice from both the secular world and the Christian world. I appreciate Catherine laying things out clearly for us. Many will sigh in relief as they read her words.

I loved reading the foreword, where she described about her own mother. In each chapter she tells a story that is personal, or one from a family situation she has observed. She has done a marvelous job explaining each point. When times get a little low for me, and I need some encouragement, I will be reaching for this book as a reference.

I'll have to admit it - I enjoyed reading this book.

Most of the time I find myself unimpressed with parenting books, mainly because, they just don't make sense or they suggest things I wouldn't think of doing with my children. I love my little ones and would not want to do anything that could hurt my relationship with them!

Cathrine did a good job writing a book that makes sense and is enjoyable and realistic!! I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a little help in their parenting.

Regret-Free Parenting: Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing It Right, By: Catherine Hickem. I would recommend it for all parents but especially Christian Moms. Catherine Hickem's perspective and willingness to share her mistakes while lifting up God's promises and truths about intentional parenting and loving our children in a way that is easy to relate to and believe you can implement is powerful and motivating.

While I already understood that the learning part of being a Mom never ends, this book inspired me that even with a 15 and 12 year old there are things I could change or add to the way I parent that still could have a positive impact on my sons. Catherine Hickem has such a wise and real perspective on being a mom, how different each child is and how important it is to remember that you have to be intentional about being the "Keeper of the Vision" for them. She walks you through the different ages and stages and has a great section on finding peace during their teenage years. She does touch just lightly on the role of Dad's but if a Dad would take the time to read this book I think it would give him a much better view of why it takes both Mom and Dad's parenting and perspective and how important and valid both are in the life of their children. The review copy of this book was provided by booksneeze.com for my personal opinion.

Regret Free Parenting by Catherine Hickem challenges the usual parenting styles and myths. The book tackles the importance of being an intentional parent and how it will affect the life of the kids. There are seven key principles shared in this book. Each principle gives practical suggestions, questions and action points to help the parent to become intentional in fulfilling her purpose and role.

I am a firm believer of intentional parenting and this book has definitely given me several action points that I want to implement in my parenting. I don't want to miss out the best years to train my children and to know them so that I can affirm them. The book also reminded me that parenting is partnering with God. I realize that it is not enough that I stay at home with the kids, but I need to pay attention, pray for them and be involved if I want to be a regret free parent someday.

The book also has a coaching plan which can help any parent get started and to put the principles into practice. There are many resources included in this book as well, including websites, books, movies and other tools which can help the parent in her journey to regret free parenting.
