Publisher's Description

In a world where the church is being ignored, it is time to bring the church to the people, and not the people to the church, says researcher and church strategy consultant Wolfgang Simson. His book Houses that Change the World (originally published in the UK) is widely recognized as a classic of the house church movement. Now revised as The House Church Book, this definitive work offers a comprehensive understanding of the past, present, and future of the house church movement—and the vital role of “ordinary” people in saturating the world with God’s truth.

As a recent seminary graduate I had my bias going in reading this book. I am glad I was wrong. The author shows us the growing need for House Church across the United States. In fact it is the U.S. that is behind in this growing movement. My eyes were opened and yours will be too.

The chance to review this book came as an answer to prayer. Seriously.I'll be frank. Attending church feels uneasy to me. It's awkward and forced. What I mean by that is, given my choice of ways to worship God, I would have never come up with what I see in the churches today. Huge, expensive buildings, tons of programs for different little compartments of society. Come in, sit down, stand up, sing, sit down shut up, listen. Give money, stand up leave. Oh yeah, make a friend or two if you can. You get the point. I understand how people outside the churches would see us as robots. Lots of us are. So I prayed.Along came this book, addressing the real Church of Christ; His body of believers. It provides us with a look at The Church as Jesus Christ taught it and how he sees it. A way of life. The very early church was dangerous to the world because it had power that was readily apparent. It posed a threat to the unsaved world because Jesus Christ's power was manifest strongly in the lives of his people and in that way, the world saw God. There was no way around it. It should still be that way.Simson looks at this topic from the lens of experience. He's a Church Planter. He knows. In this book, he attacks the stagnation and impersonal nature of our popular, organized worship centers and challenges us to examine them with a spiritual eye. They mostly have termites. Simson sums up what a lot of us are thinking if we are honest with ourselves "What does church have to do with God?" If you, like me, come up with the answer "Not much, I guess," go pick up this book and read it. It will be like reading your own thoughts.I can't do it justice, to be honest. It's hit me so close to home I'm staggered. Well written, honest and more than a little scary, The House Church Book is a gemstone. Not enough Christian literature can stand up as this one does. Go buy it.
