Publisher's Description

A Story of Love That Won't Let Go - No Matter What!

California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.
Then she meets Michael Hosea, a man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything. Michael obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation, until despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw.
But with her unexpected softening comes overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she no longer can deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael does…the One who will never let her go.
A powerful retelling of the story of Gomer and Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

Includes a six-part reading group guide!

Author Bio

From 1976 to 1985, Francine Rivers had a successful writing career in the general market, and her books were awarded or nominated for numerous awards and prizes. Although raised in a religious home, Francine did not truly encounter Christ until later in life, when she was already a wife, mother of three, and an established romance novelist. Shortly after becoming a born-again Christian in 1986, Francine wrote Redeeming Love as her statement of faith. This retelling of the biblical story of Gomer and Hosea set during the time of the California Gold Rush is now considered by many to be a classic work of Christian fiction. Redeeming Love continues to be one of the Christian Booksellers Association’s top-selling titles, and it has held a spot on the Christian bestsellers list for nearly a decade.

Since Redeeming Love, Francine has published numerous novels with Christian themes--all bestsellers--and she has continued to win both industry acclaim and reader loyalty around the globe. Her Christian novels have also been awarded or nominated for numerous awards, including the RITA Award, the Christy Award, and the ECPA Gold Medallion. In 1997, Francine was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. Francine’s novels have been translated into over twenty different languages, and she enjoys bestseller status in many foreign countries including Germany, The Netherlands, and South Africa.

Francine and her husband, Rick, live in Northern California and enjoy the time spent with their three grown children and every opportunity to spoil their four grandchildren. She uses her writing to draw closer to the Lord, and that through her work she might worship and praise Jesus for all He has done and is doing in her life. Visit Francine online at

I was hesitant to read this book because it looked like a cheesy romance novel, but I have to admit I couldn't put it down. Really a good story that kept my head in the pages for a week straight. I just finished it last night and I'm eager to pick up another Francine River's book.

Francine Rivers is an excellent story teller; and this is a grand story. Ultimately, it is the picture of God's love for His people. It is a symbolic retelling of the story of Hosea in the Bible, which is history based on the fact of God's refusal to give up on us, His people. This book started a little slow, but once the background was put in place it really picked up and I (almost) could not put it down until I read the last page. It is very thick, very detailed and one big chunk of reading, but well worth it. With warm weather upon us, this is exactly the kind of book to sit down with a tall glass of iced tea and read on!

I am not in the habit of crying over books. I am a big boy.

But this one did inspire a bit of moisture when I read it. Just a little bit.

This is an awesome book. It is a re-telling of the story of Hosea, which in turn is an allegory for the Redeeming Love shown by God in reaching out to his church. Farmer Michael Hosea hears the voice of God telling him to take a wife. (As did Hosea the prophet) In both instances they are told to take an unfaithful prostitute as their wife. Michael hears and obeys, however his chosen wife, the prostitute known only as Angel, is less convinced of his intentions. So begins a long journey of discovery for both of them.

It is beautiful, and beautifully written. I many have teared up a little on occasion.

I remember reading an interview with Francine Rivers about how her publishers tried to get her to publish this book under a pseudonym. It was her first book published after becoming a Christian, and they were afraid of it being tainted by association with her secular romances. (Which were a little more_ explicit.)

She said however that the story was about redemption, and the power of a changed life, and so it was published as the first of many Christian novels under her name, a testimony to how her writing had been redeemed as she had been.

Redeeming Love has over a million copies in print and has been through several editions since it was originally published in 1991. I just finished reading the 2005 edition, which includes a study guide by Peggy Lynch with some really thought provoking discussion questions. As I write this review in December 2013, Redeeming Love remains on the ECPA and CBA Best Seller Lists. I think the case can be made that this book has become a classic of Christian fiction. I am happy to have read it and I would recommend it highly to Christians and non-Christians alike. It can be read as an allegory with significant Christian themes, exploring God's unconditional love, even for those who don't feel worthy of that love. And it can be read as a beautiful and emotional love story between two very complex and memorable characters.

Redeeming Love is set in California during the time of the Gold Rush. It tells the love story of a godly man named Michael Hosea who is called to marry a prostitute known as Angel. She is a beautiful woman who was sold into prostitution as a child, and feels herself incapable of loving Michael back or living any other kind of life than the one to which she is accustomed, despite the unhappiness it brings her. Michael loves her continually and forgives her repeatedly, despite the pain she brings him, and God uses this to begin the process of redemption in Angel's life. But it isn't until she comes to know God's unconditional love for herself that her redemption can be complete.

I found this to be an engaging and deeply moving story that dealt with tough issues revolving around sin, shame, and forgiveness in a very tender hearted way. The allegory is there, just as it is in the Book of Hosea from the Bible on which this story is loosely based, but it's subtly woven into the fabric of the romance and doesn't feel at all forced or contrived.

The prologue sets up the story by describing Sarah's childhood and how she came to be the woman Michael would know as Angel and later as Amanda. It goes a long way toward making her feel real, believable, and sympathetic, even when her actions might tend to make her seem cold-hearted and unsympathetic, much as she is seen by Paul and other characters who do not know her well.

"Head-hopping" is a storytelling technique that has fallen out of vogue in recent years, in which the viewpoint from which the story is told jumps from one character's thoughts to another character's thoughts and back within a single scene. The argument against head-hopping, is that these jumps can confuse the reader and prevent him or her from developing a close rapport with a single character. In some cases, I think that can be an issue. In this case, I thought the technique was handled deftly with clear clues provided each time the viewpoint was changed preventing confusion. And I thought it added depth to the story to be able to see it from multiple viewpoints more or less at once. Given the dichotomy between Angel's thoughts and actions and the way her actions were interpreted by other characters, I think the technique played a useful role.

This story moved me to tears at a couple of points near the end of the book. I felt my heart breaking right along with Michael at some of the decisions Angel made over the course of the story, but I just had to keep reading to see how it would end. Redeeming Love was a beautiful exploration of love in all its manifestations from the platonic love of friends to the love between a husband and wife, to self-sacrificial love, to the love of God for mankind. All in all, an enjoyable and thought provoking read. Highly recommended.

It is the 1850 in California, and the gold rush is well underway. Men are in overabundance, and the few women that reside there live in brothels and pleasure palaces. Angel is one such woman, though not by choice. Sold to a man in a brothel as a child, she barely remembers the happier days before her mother died. She is haunted by memories of her father, her broken-hearted mother, her cruel grandparents and life in the enchanting little cottage before everything went wrong.

The only thing that keeps her alive is her hatred. Hatred towards the man who bought her, hatred towards the men she is forced to take care of, and hatred towards God Himself for giving her life and then keeping her alive. Even after she is free of her original master, she ends up in Pair-A-Dice working in another brothel because she knows no other way to live.

Then Michael Hosea rides into town. Intrigued by the cold, hard, icy demeanor of a woman so young and beautiful, he is compelled by Someone greater than himself to seek her out and marry her. It is a mission that he himself is scarcely prepared to carry out. Despite Michael's tender love for the prostitute he only knows as "Angel" and his patience in waiting for her to be ready to receive his love as it was meant to be - she continually runs away from him. Again and again she leaves Michael behind. At first, she leaves him because she doesn't want to belong to another man. Then she leaves him because she loves him. Will Michael ever be able to demonstrate God's love to a woman who refuses to see the truth and be helped? And will Angel ever willingly receive love from the Father who will never let her down?

I read this book ten years ago, and it is just the kind of book you want to read over and over again. No matter what point you are in your life, this book is such a wonderful reminder that God's love for us never changes, expires, or wavers. Angel is the lowest of the low, yet God raises her up to be the woman He intended her to be. Obviously, one has questions as to how God allows horrible things to happen to people. But God has a plan in everything, and no matter what happens in our lives, God is there, He is watching, and He is in control. Rivers has written a book that is for everybody, regardless of age, race, denomination, or sex. It will open your eyes to God's love and will remind you that no matter what, God is always present.
