Sue Duffy in her new book "Red Dawn Rising" Book Two in the Red Returning Trilogy series published by Kregel Publications gives us a contemporary thriller.

From the back cover: Can they decipher the architect's blueprint for disaster in time?

They come from opposite sides of the world...and opposite lives.

She is a young set designer on Broadway. He is a former KGB assassin trying to outrun his vicious past and the underground revolution he once served. What they have in common are painful secrets that fester deep inside them, and an urgent quest for answers that can save the United States from a massive terrorist strike...and famed Lisel Bower from assassination.

Working separately for widely divergent motives, Cass Rodino tracks the mysterious activities of a man she knows well, following him into the New York night and fleeing her own wounded past. Her counterpart, Evgeny Kozlov, has narrowly escaped his Russian homeland to pursue a phantom figure, known only as the Architect, who has masterminded an insidious plot to destroy the American's confidence in their country and its powers to protect them.

The arcs of their investigations converge when Cass and Evgeny are swept into a major CIA/FBI dragnet, only to discover that the target of their search is conspiring to resurrect the Soviet Union and holds a secret that could devastate the administration of a U. S. President.

With time slipping from their grasp, who or what will lead them to the center of the maze and the Architect? Will they get there in time to save Liesel?

Political intrigue and suspense saturates "Red Dawn Rising". There is a villain, the Architect, who wants to undermine the United States, resurrect the Soviet Union and assassinate Liesel Bower. Evgeny escapes Russia trying to track the Architect down and stop him. Cass is out to stop the assassination. Now Cass and Evgeny need to work together to accomplish both their plans. "Red Dawn Rising" is almost a non-stop action thriller. Ms. Duffy has put in so many twists and turns in her story that it would make a roller coaster envious. Cass, Evgeny and Lisel are wonderful characters that we care about, want to see escape the danger that they find themselves in and want them to succeed. Sue Duffy has given us a unique thriller that will keep you on the edge of your chair as you read and flip pages as fast as possible. I recommend this book highly and look forward to the next book in the series!

This is the second book in this series of Red Returning, that I have read. It is just as good at the first one, and not one to be missed.

We have return visits and more trials for some of the characters from the first book "The Sound of Red Returning". We also meet some new faces, and are again involved with people who are trying to destroy the USA.

Cass Rodino is carrying unnecessary guilt, she also doesn't see what is right under her nose. Somehow she becomes involved in trying to save Both Liesl Bower, and this Country. We do learn some surprising facts, and some that will really surprise you, and you don't see coming.

Be ready for a lot of action, and what we don't see right in front of us, they look and act like the rest of us, but they are not what they appear. Do you think you really know your next door neighbor? Better yet how about your father or mother.

Don't miss this book that will really make you think, it is all possible.

I received this book through Kregel Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

This is my first Sue Duffy book and it's a "keeper." The story line involves international intrigue and individuals on both sides who spy, kill, capture, create mayhem. Red Dawn Rising is book two in a series and I missed book one, The Sound of Red Returning, which I regret. However, one may read Red Dawn Rising as a stand-alone book.

Our main female lead, Cass Rodino, is a wealthy young woman who has experienced sorrow and disappointment in life. She follows her step-father under cloak of darkness because her mother suspects his having an affair. However, it opens wide the door of danger, intrigue, and national security.

During the same time frame, Evgeny Kozlov, a Russian spy is pursuing another Russian who is intent on destroying the confidence of the American people in their country and government's powers of protection. This Russian is known as the "Architect." The Architect's plan is even far more reaching on the international scene as he plans to shape the future of Israel, Russia, and America. His identity unknown to most everyone.

I enjoyed the story, the action, and the characters. The story was interesting to read and to consider the premise that such could actually occur. It is encouraging to read of CIA, FBI, and police agencies involved in the protection of our country and how much goes on of which the average citizen has no idea. I know this is a novel but it brings a surge of pride when good triumphs over evil. It is also encouraging to read of characters of little or no faith coming to trust in the God that saves and shelters.

I recommend Red Dawn Rising for home libraries, public and school libraries, and individual reads.

There is an underground move within Russia to see that once dominating nation return to its former glory. Powerful men in Russia are making terrorist plans for the U.S. There are sleeper agents in America who are ready to cause at a moment's notice the damage they have been instructed to create. And one of them is in the White House, Russia's own mole.

Up against these Russian agents is Cass Rodino, a set designer on Broadway. She inadvertently comes across the Russian espionage when she follows her step-father's late night adventures. Cass' mother is sure her husband has a mistress but what Cass finds is his link to terrorism. At her side is Jordan Winslow, her neighbor, friend and shoe store owner.

The heroine of the first novel in this series, professional pianist Liesl Bower, is still in danger. Hovering near her is the Russian agent who had been tasked with killing her. Now he is willing to protect her because he has a greater enemy - the Architect, the man who would cause terror in America.

This is a great follow up to The Sound of Red Returning. If you have not read that book, you should before starting this one. While this book could possibly be read alone, much of the background of Liesl and her bravery would be missed.

There is a great interplay between the amateur spy sleuths Cass and Jordan and the professionals from the CIA and FBI. It was fun to read of the CIA reluctantly allowing the young people's involvement.

Liesl is a Christian and her trust in God is well presented in the story line. There are also themes of redemption and forgiveness as the characters interact.

Readers who like Russian espionage with twists and turns will like this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

Sue Duffy's latest book in her trilogy, "Red Returning", is titled Red Dawn Rising. This picks up where the first book, The Sound of Red Returning, left off. The story takes place between basically three venues: New York City, Charleston and Washington, D.C. This a contemporary suspense novel with short, crisp chapters that make for easy reading.

In addition to the characters from the first book, who appear again in this storyline, there is the addition of Jordan Winslow, Cass Rodino, her mother and step-father, as well as the emergence of the Architect, who the person in charge of the entire saboteur network intent on destroying U.S. landmarks. In addition, the network is to dispose of Liesl Bower, who thwarted their plans in the first book. The saboteurs have long been in place and know what their assignments are; they are just waiting for the signal from the Architect.

Liesl is preparing for her wedding later in the afternoon when she answers the front door. She doesn't realize she is opening the door to danger on a life-threatening scale. Her only means of escape is Evgeny Kozlov, the man who tried to kill her just a short time ago. Now, he has come to her rescue or has he? Is this just another ploy to get her to trust him so he can finally carry out his mission to kill her? What information does the young couple, Cass and Jordan, have that is a danger to her? Liesl is once again on the run, although this time she is not alone. Who has Cass's stepfather been meeting secretly with at night, but claiming he was only meeting a weird client after hours in their home?

There are many surprises and twists in the plot that keep the reader guessing what will happen next. I liked seeing Liesl's growing spiritual development and her telling others about God. Now, Cass and her mother are beginning a return to the faith they both abandoned long ago thanks to Liesl. I hope in the third book to see Jordan and Cass speak of their newfound faith and that their budding romance will continue. This book is filled with action, suspense and spy thrilling moments. It was very entertaining and the pages flew through my fingers as I eagerly read each page. I await the final book in the series to see how people and their relationships with each other and with God mature. This is just a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a rainy day!
