Publisher's Description

You can’t. God can.
Life never lacks for improvement—in ourselves, in our relationships, in just about everything. But all our brave stabs at getting better, if they ever change anything, are incomplete at best, complete failures at worst. Sometimes much worse.
Unless . . .
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the great “unless” of life—both for those who already believe (but can’t believe the messes they’re still capable of making), as well as those who don’t yet believe but just know their way isn’t working.
Recovering Redemption, written with a pastor’s bold intensity and a counselor’s discerning insight, takes you deeply into Scripture to take you deeply inside yourself, discovering that the heart of all our problems is truly the problem of our hearts. But because of what God has done, and because of what God can do, the most confident, contented person you know could actually be you—redeemed through Jesus Christ.
None of us, really, can do what’s required to change our lives for the better, taking what’s persistently frustrating and making it perfectly satisfying. Yet as hopeless as that may sound, it is the flat-line truth in which good news comes to life . . . to your life. For just as what’s lost can be found, what’s wrong can—even now—be recovered.

Author Bio

Matt Chandler serves as Lead Pastor of Teaching at The Village Church in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He came to The Village in December 2002 and describes his tenure as a replanting effort where he was involved in changing the theological and philosophical culture of the congregation. The church has witnessed a tremendous response growing from 160 people to over 11,000 with campuses in Flower Mound, Dallas, Denton and Fort Worth.

Matt is currently involved in church planting efforts both locally and internationally through The Village and various strategic partnerships. He serves as president of Acts 29, a worldwide church-planting organization. Over the last 10 years, Acts 29 has emerged from a small band of brothers to nearly 500 churches in the United States and around the world.
Beyond speaking at conferences throughout the world, Matt has also written two books, The Explicit Gospel, published in April 2012, and Creature of the Word, released in October 2012. His greatest joy outside of Jesus is being married to Lauren and being a dad to their three children, Audrey, Reid and Norah.

"Matt Chandler is one of the best Bible preachers on the earth and one of the godliest men I know." -Mark Driscoll, Founding and Preaching Pastor, Mars Hill Church

"Matt Chandler presents the gospel in a way that is balanced, hope-filled, and very, very serious, all the while presented with Matt's trademark humor." -Mark Dever, President, 9Marks

Publisher's Description

Because we have a tendency to drift from the gospel, we must be reoriented back to the gospel. We must recover a right understanding and application of the gospel. We must see that the gospel is the fuel for salvation and sanctification and the panacea to fix all things.

The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9

I can't. God can.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

God meets you where you are.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Recovering Redemption is a book with pastoral heart written to reorient and guide the church back to its central mission: The redemption of the world by God in Christ. It isn't that the message of that redemption has changed; instead, the church has floundered for lack of a vision of that redemption as its very soul.

In that way, this book would be better titled "Reclaiming Redemption."

But that's hardly a surprise. Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village Church and president of Acts 29, knows first-hand how easily churches need this recovering, reclaimed message. Michael Snetzer, as Groups Pastor at The Village Church, also knows the need for this message in a church's life. Together, they bring a unified voice with a strong message.

This book hardly contains new information. Its retelling of the biblical story in the first three chapters is so beautifully clear. "Bad news is the backdrop against which good news really shines. So let there be darkness. And let there be light" (p. 12).

But they hardly leave that simple message at the level of just information. No, this book means to achieve formation, "a gospel-saturated perspective on how to change". So it's filled with personal stories; the best biblical theology is biography. "The beauty of Christ's gospel is the great 'unless' of life ... we've seen it play out in our lives" (p. 45).

This book is an ideal introduction to the Christian faith for newcomers and inquirers.

I'm a very avid reader so I usually breeze through books. But let me tell you, Recovering Redemption, stopped me in my tracks. I tried to just plow through it, but the words just wouldn't let me. I found myself reading a chapter and then having to put the book down and just digest what it contained.

The description of the book says that it is intended for the unbeliever who knows that their way isn't working and the believer that still finds themselves in messes. I'm of the later category. This book made me recall how I felt when I was first redeemed. I was totally sold out. I trusted Jesus with everything. But slowly that began to slip away. I began to trust myself more and more to set things right.

The beauty of this book is that it is a great reminder that apart from Christ we are nothing. Matt Chandler and Michael Snetzer make the perfect team to drive this point home. Matt is blunt in stating what the problem as well as the solution is. Michael adds the perspective of a relational aspect to the situation. In other words Matt is black and white and Michael adds different hues of color that add to the final picture.

If you are like me you are going to come away from this book with a new appreciation of the Gospel message. Recovering Redemption will allow you to again reclaim what you may have thought was lost when in reality it was there all the time. It was just buried under all the other things that you have used to find peace but instead found strife. I urge you to pick a copy up and let it help you peel back the layers that have come between you and the life giving message of Christ.
