In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul places love at the very center of what it means to embrace life in Christ. All other spiritual gifts are worth nothing in comparison. But the love explained in those verses is nothing short of radical.
Fernandos pastoral workin the midst of the cultural and ethnic tensions of Sri Lankaoften brought up a very real and honest question: Can the biblical teaching about love actually be practiced? The answer he discovered is a resounding yes. The radical love of God is not only real, but it is the key to experiencing joy in the pain and suffering of this world.
Believers must look to the Scriptures for Gods teaching on the true nature of love, its divine origins, and its power for those who trust in Christ. This book offers reflections on the Bibles consistent teaching on love and shares real-life experiences of learning to love in difficult situations.
Ajith Fernando (ThM, DD) served for thirty-five years as the National Director of Youth for Christ in Sri Lanka and now serves as its Teaching Director. He is a Bible expositor with a worldwide ministry. Ajith studied at Asbury Theological Seminary and Fuller Seminary and spends much of his time mentoring and counseling Christian workers. I have personally met the author of this book, Ajith Fernando and have heard him preach. I have great respect for him. He is one of the most renowned preachers in the world and has spoken at several international gatherings of world Christian leaders.

Fernando adequately analyses this often used and well know passage as he points out certain key elements of the chapter. In this in depth look at an important chapter within Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, Fernando provides practical examples of the importance of love within the life of a Christian. The author embraces the very realistic views of love and all that this immense term pertains, such as forgiveness, acts of kindness, genuine compassion, and the like. In essence, he explains the love is not simply a feeling, but a living expression.
As I started reading this book, I was looking for a fresh or new look on a passage of scripture that is often taught. Though the author has reason to say that we can often miss the whole context of the passage, I felt that this lacked in anything substantially unique. Though filled with much truth, this book felt like simply a reiteration of what I already knew (having been born in the church and now in seminary). Thus, I must say that this is not a book for one who is moderately versed in the letters of Paul. However, this is a great resource for one seeking to begin their learning. Since this book did little for me, I have to give it a 3 of stars.

People love to hear the section that "love is patient, love is kind . . .," but I will not read that scripture without starting at the beginning of the chapter. It brings the passage to life.
Ajith Fernando, the author of Reclaiming Love: Radical Relationships in a Complex World has masterfully written about the great "love chapter" of the Bible. His writing is easy to read and understand. It can be used as a devotional, or as a sermon. At times he goes in depth to help us better understand what this chapter is about, as particular word meanings are studied.
He used stories and examples from his time in Sri Lanka, which helped bring some of the passages come to life a little more. Fernando helps us to better understand what it means to love, since love is the cornerstone of faith in Christ. As we accept His love and then pass His love on to others. How we love is a sign of our spiritual health.
This was an excellent book and I highly recommend it. This book was provided by Zondervan through the program called BookSneeze in exchange for an objective review of this book by Ajith Fernando, Reclaiming Love: Radical Relationships in a Complex World.

It's written like a sermon (as in, you don't have to look anything up), and it's easy to read and understand. The author looked at each verse or group of ideas in 1 Corinthians 13, explained any Hebrew words that don't translate well into English, and brought in related Scripture to round out our understanding.
The real life examples that he used came from his life and work in Sri Lanka, but the focus was on the Bible verses rather than details about Sri Lanka. From the book description, I had thought the book would talk more about Sri Lanka in the context of 1 Corinthians 13 love being lived out.
Though not quite what I expected, I was challenge by this book and felt it helped me to better understood 1 Corinthians 13. I plan to read this book once a year as a devotional. I've taken to reading 1 Corinthians 13 each morning and asking God to live that type of love out through me. I've been surprised at the difference this has made. I'd highly recommend this insightful, important book.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher through Booksneeze.com.
