My life is forever changed
August 22, 2014
I received Reckless Devotion from Chosen Publishers to review, I've been a "Christian" for over 30 years, this book is SO inspirational. My first impression after reading the first 20 devotional pages was "what have I done with my life as a follower of Christ." It is changing me, causing me to go deeper in my surrender to God. The book by Missionaries, Heidi and Roland Baker is written with heartfelt passion. The testimonies throughout the book are powerful. At the end of each section there are though provoking questions and prayers. It is well written and I highly recommend it to anyone who desires a deeper fellowship with God.
Reckless Devotion is written by Heidi and Rolland Baker. They are the founders of Iris Global and are missionaries in Mozambique.
This is a 365 day journey to draw closer to God. To develop a radical love for Jesus and spread it everywhere you go. I like that these are numbered so you can start when ever you want. The topics are separated into 52 weeks. Week one was about "An Adventure Beyond Your Wildest Imaginings."
Day 1 is called Jars of Clay - But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us, 2 Corinthians 4:7. Here is an excerpt from that chapter: "Simple jars of clay are formed in the dust and the dirt and used in the business of life. They aren't beautiful; they don't stand out as unusual on the outside; it's what they hold inside that is of real value. In spiritual terms, we are these little jars of clay....I am made to carry the all-surpassing power of the One whom I love so deeply, and the good news is, so are you....He made us to be receptacles for His glory, His love, His compassion, His grace, and His mercy. All He wants is a place to inhabit."
Every seven days there's a Come Closer message. Questions are asked in the beginning. Then the inspiring note, then a prayer. The one for Day 7 is about coming closer to God, to be filled with His love. To receive a fresh encounter with our Lord and Savior. Thankful that we can come to God with our requests.
While reading the first 19 days of this devotional book, I have been inspired, desiring more of Jesus, to follow Him wholeheartedly, convicted, etc...I love the heart of Rolland and Heidi Baker as they love like Jesus loved people. I want more of Jesus! To be more like Him and we can only do that when we spend time in His presence.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in return for my honest review.
This is a wonderful daily devotional that touts itself as 365 Days into the heart of radical love. That description is absolutely accurate. Each daily reading is filled with love and inspiration. Each focuses on a specific act or way to deepen ones devotion and move closer to God. It seems like a book that can be read daily for many years, with readers finding something new each time.
This book is not set up by calendar date, as so many others. Readers can begin on the first day page any day of the year. Any day is a great place to begin. These passionate, encouraging messages provide much comfort and food for thought. Each group of daily readings includes a page titled Come Closer which includes such things as prayers, questions to ask ourselves, Scriptural references and point that tie together that group of pages in a common theme. These personal studies will enrich and strengthen the readers faith. They might also be useful for a small group study.
To sum up: Buy this book. Read it. Fall in love with it and with God. Revel in his love and the many ways he works through us, using us like clay jars filled with his love and ready to pour out to everyone we encounter.
I was given a free copy of this book by Chosen, a division of Baker Publishing Group. I highly recommend it for adults and teenagers.
Heidi and Rolland Baker are missionaries to Mozambique, where they have served for 19 years. They have a passion for their mission and for sharing God's love with some of the poorest children in the world. Living this life has allowed them to see God's provision for His children in a very real and practical way. They take the reader, day by day, through an adventure to that kind of devotion; the type of devotion that this book is named for. These readings are written to challenge us to embrace that reckless devotion to the "One who loves you more than you can imagine." There are 365 daily readings, each one less than one page long. Some include a prayer that the reader can pray at the end of the reading for that day's subject. Each week is ended with a page of suggestions to put the week's reading to work in your own life, many with scripture references. The weeks are also centered on a particular subject with titles such as Allowing Jesus Complete Access, Passion for His Presence, A Constant Supply of Oil, The Fruit of Suffering, The Path to Joy, 52 in all. The pages are not dated, so you can start any time during the year. The Bakers invite you to spend a year with them experiencing a passion filled walk with God. This is not a typical daily devotion with a thought to ponder and scripture to read. It is an active challenge to change the way you live your life in Christ and what you give of yourself. The Bakers will take you from thinking about it to fully living it by the end of a year. It does not demand that you sell all you have and give the money to the poor; nor do they suggest that you enter the mission field to experience the reckless devotion God deserves. Their premise is to "surrender totally to God and become more fully the person He has always intended you to be." I absolutely love this book! It is exactly what we need in today's world with the multitude of distractions we have. I give Reckless Devotion five stars!
"All God wants is my laid-down love, my reckless devotion. He is asking the same from you." -----Heidi Baker
I received a copy of Reckless Devotion from the publisher, Chosen Books, in exchange for my honest review. These words are my opinion.
Heidi and Rolland Baker, missionaries for thirty years as well as directors of Iris Ministries, share their experiences, faith, thoughts, and encouragement in 365 daily devotions, grouped into themes for each week. A Bible verse followed by a short thought-provoking devotion, inspire ideas for action and reassurance in the following of God's will. Written in a direct way with volumes of wisdom and knowledge, Reckless Devotion tugs at your heart to love radically_
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Though each short devotion consists of only a page length, the message contained within is strong and deeply rooted. Backed by experience and strength, Heidi and Rolland Baker quietly yet powerfully challenge you to consider how to love more profoundly, live more faithfully, appreciate more deeply, and follow God more completely. This devotional book would be great for a youth ministry or inter-generational Bible study coupled with service, as well as individual devotional time. Well done_mission accomplished! (Several other books by the Bakers are also available which I plan to explore now.)
