Neither a single presentation of the author's own philosophy, nor a simple compendium of all of the many varieties of the philosophy of religion, this volume instead examines: 1) a number of cental qustions that in various historical periods have guided philosophical investigation of the meaning of religious phenomena; 2) basic approaches for answering such questions that have been proposed over the centuies and that still merit consideration today; 3) methods that lead from these starting points toward the philosophical understanding that is sought. In this way the author provides an overview of the varity of possible ways in which the philosophy of religion has been understood and it can still be pursed today.
