This six-session small group Bible study, The Reason for God, captures live and unscripted conversations with a group of people to address their doubts and objections to Christianity. Using literature, philosophy, and Scripture, Keller and the group explore the truth of Christianity.
In his New York Times bestselling book The Reason for God, Timothy Keller established himself as a modern-day C. S. Lewis who brings together faith and intellect, theology and popular culture, modern-day objections and historic Christian beliefs.
Now fans of the book will find resources to help them engage with those same objections, drawing on recent scholarship and debates. The Reason for God small group Bible study can be used individually, with groups, or by any believer who is engaging with friends who dont share his or her beliefs.
Christians will be challenged to wrestle with their friends and neighbors hardest questions, and to engage those questions in ways that will spark an honest, enriching, and humbling dialogue, as is modeled during the sessions.
The Reason for God DVD and Discussion Guide (both included in this pack) are designed to help small groups and individuals dig deeper into objections of the Christian faith and to learn about both sides of the issues.

We watched it to review before our next study night and neither of us care for it at all, it does not meet our expectations of what is stated in the product description. It seems to give more arguments NOT to believe in Christianity. Tim Keller "wrapping it up" at the end of the 20 minutes does not address everything said by the non-believers, and does not answer their objections which we thought it would do, since the title is "The Reason for God".
The discussion guide and format of the discussion group in the DVD is geared more towards training a believer to be more effective when sharing their faith with a non-believer, but a non-believer watching this video will be pushed even further away from accepting Christ.
I do not recommend this study for any new believers or non-believers on the fence

To be able to do this requires more than acceptance based on what someone else has said, but based on a foundation found in Scripture. The Reason for God DVD and leader guide provided for us a resource to begin the conversations and investigate out beliefs without having to have a background in apologetics. The DVD is done with excellence and the discussion guide is well written with Discussion questions and answer guides included. I highly recommend this series if you are looking for something to ground your adults and teens in the faith by helping them think on their own and search the Scriptures for themselves.

I thought this would be a great resource to show other Christians:
(A): Non-believers do have important questions.
(B): What those specific concerns are.
(C): There are great answers to all of them!
The basic formulation with the study is that the video sessions (which are very high quality in production value and content management) don't give you the answers to questions, it just opens the door for the group to address those questions that the non-believers on the videos are asking. Timothy Keller will basically describe the topic, and then the majority of the videos are the non-believers discussing the issues between themselves. Once in a while Timothy will answer a question with basics, and is a good starting point for further discussion.
The book that comes with the video is packed full of great additional questions and great answers. Personally, I won't be using the booklet too much because of the format of the group I am leading, but if one were to simply follow the book's questions and answers it would be a great contribution to the knowledge and understanding for those involved in the group study. The answers given in the book are very thorough and well thought out. What I really enjoy about this study is that it's very flexible and open. The video gives you real questions and discussions, and what you do about those questions is up to you!
Q: Can this DVD be used with teens? In other words, would a youth pastor/volunteer, have success in using this with 14 or 16 year-olds? Would average teens understand this DVD and connect with it, or would they most likely find it boring and irrelevant?
Some teens will find this study fascinating, others will find it less than exciting. A great way to test the group would be to ask a couple of questions and see what happens.
If you ask "Why does God allow evil in the world", and no one seems interested, this is not the study for your group.
If it launches into a huge discussion, this study will help guide the discussion and give some resources to work with.
If possible, you may want to have someone who has experience with this kind of material leading the discussion. For a person with limited subject knowledge to lead it, there may be more confusion than clarification to younger minds who may not have their foundation in God firmly established.
Q: Could you post the titles of each session, or a picture of the table of contents?
Session 1 - Isn't the Bible a Myth?/Hasn't Science Disproved Christianity? Session 2 - How Can You Say There is Only One Way to God?/What About Other Religions? Session 3 - What Gives You the Right to Tell Me How to Live My Life?/Why are There So Many Rules? Session 4 - Why Does God Allow Suffering?/ Why is There So Much Evil in the World? Discussion 5 - Why is the Church Responsible for So Much Injustice?/Why are Christians Such Hypocrites? Discussion 6 - How Can God be Full of Love and Wrath at the Same Time?/ How Can God Send Good People to Hell?
Q: How long is each video session?
Each DVD session is approximately 20 minutes long.
Q: Is it necessary to read Keller's book to accompany this DVD study, or is the discussion guide sufficient?
The DVD is designed to be used with the discussion guide. The book would offer additional insights into the subject matter which may better help to facilitate the study especially if you have a very inquisitive group.
Q: Is there a difference between the discussion guide (sold with the DVD) and the participants guide (sold separately)? I am talking about the series by Tim Keller The Reason for God.
The discussion guide and the participant's guide are the same book.
