I was excited to see "The Power Based Life" by Mike Flynt on the list of books available receive and review from Booksneeze. I remember reading the story of his return to college in his fifties to play football. Mike's strategies for developing a "power based life" center upon a personal relationship with Christ. He draws from his own experiences and also utilizes the stories of others to show how building upon your strengths gives a life of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Obviously this book is based on a Christ centered relationship and Mike tells of his efforts before Christ and afterwards. However, the book offers practical advice that could prove helpful to anyone, whether they are a Christian or not. That said, he emphasizes discovering who God has created us to be.

This book can be read in a short time and provides valuable strategies and insights.

Mike Flynt helped me realize that one really needs to have a strong-will to be able to get through life's many difficulties. He let me realize why and how events could have happened in my life by letting me associate with his own experiences. Although it was quite hard for me to associate with his experiences in sports, he helped me realize that some aspects of life should have their own point of view. Good vibes, trust in God and a fighting force - things I've finally come to understand, all thanks to this book.

According to Christianbook.net, the Power-Based Life is

"Strength training coach Mike Flynt offers his twelve life strategies that readers can use to strengthen their bodies, minds, and spirits as they become the people God created-and then find the work they were designed to do. These strategies or power bases illustrate principles that enable us to meet challenges and face each day's pressures with confidence. They include:

    Playing to your strengths

    Mastering the essentials

    Cultivating a winning attitude

    Defying the skeptics

    Knowing who you play for

    Practicing radical mercy

Sowing in health to reap a longer life

The Power-Based Life is filled with stories of football, business, and family experiences from Mike's life and others. Each principle, based on a biblical truth, offers a "power-up" for the journey. Join Coach Flynt to discover and then realize your own life's dreams and goals."

I completely agree with this assesment of the book. Flint's book analyzes experiences that most of us have as young men and allows us to see how each of those experiences prepares us to become who God intends us to be. Flint does, however, fall a bit short on the analysis end. It's not quite "academic" enough for me. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it reads like a textbook to middle schoolers.

Overall, it was a pleasant read with decent messages and an easy to follow form.

I enjoy reading self-improvement books so looked forward to reading this book by Mike Flynt. In his senior year at college, Flynt was expelled for fighting and never got to complete his football career. At the age of 59, he returned to that same college and played his final year of football.

The Power-Based Life was developed out of Mike's desire to help others discover how to become the person God planned for them to be. He encourages his readers to find their talents and figure out how to make money at it. He stresses the need for positive self talk, including memorizing of Scripture. He says, "If you can dream it you can achieve it" and encourages the reader to visualize a positive outcome. He points out the need to be a team player, and reminds us that as members of the church we are members of one another.

His final chapters teach on how to deal with adversity, the importance of cutting others slack, and how to make the most out of your life, as you don't know how much time you have left.

The chapter I enjoyed the most was the one entitled, "Visualization: See What Can Be." Mike presents this chapter well and has some good illustrations. Unfortunately, I found this book overall to be disappointing. I think men—especially sportsmen—would probably get more out of it than I did.

I was recently able to read The Power-Based Life: Realize Your Life's Goals and Dreams by Strengthening Your Body,Mind, and Spirit. by Mike Flynt. Mike Flynt is not someone I would have initially thought to read but I was pleasantly surprised. Mike Flynt uses this book to try to help other people begin to be able to realize and live their life's goal. With chapter headings like, "Know who you are playing for" or "Raise Your Banner", it's easy to follow and it's easy to understand. While the book is supposed to be about finding your dream job or career, I felt that I could apply many of the concepts and ideas to just being a better person. The person that I want to be. I love the way that Mike is able to use biblical stories and scriptures to illustrate his point and the way that he is able to show someone how to incorporate them into their own 'mantras'. This book was easy to read and yet the topics that were being discussed were not sugar coated. I would recommend that everyone read this book; don't let the tagline discourage you. It is easily applied to any and all walks of life. Enjoy!!!
