An NFL quarterback and his influential pastor show men how to lead--in marriage and family, business and life--for a legacy that lasts.
What are the parallels between a quarterback leading his team to a championship and a husband and father leading his family into a happy, successful future? As it turns out, plenty. In this motivating, story-driven journey for men of all ages, NFL quarterback Colt McCoy and Pastor Matt Carter lay down the building blocks of positive character, and help men embrace their full potential for "strong, tender, gospel-centered" influence in home and community. Prepare for a paradigm-shifting view of biblical manhood.
Every man wants to succeed. But for so many, life seems to get in the way. We all have friendsgood men, followers of Christ evenwho start out well but before long, theyre failing at relationships, bending ethical standards, or driving
themselves so hard at work theyre losing the hearts of their wife and kids.
In The Real Win, Colt McCoy and Matt Carter wrestle deeply and personally with this challenge, then deliver down-to-earth, biblical answers. Based on their personal experiences and a close study of Scripture, McCoy and Carter show men:
• Why so much depends on who you trust and who you serve
• Why every man is called to lead and why every man can
• How to man up to temptationand conquer it
• How to find the "win" even in your biggest failure
"The real win means trusting the Lord and walking with Jesus no matter what," write Matt and Colt. "That kind of faithfulness is possible for any man who follows God with all his heart. No matter what circumstances threaten him, a
faithful man is the most truly confident man in the room."
Now includes bonus section on mentoring, plus a small group reading guide.
Colt McCoy is an NFL quarterback who became the winningest quarterback in the history of NCAA football and led the University of Texas to the 2010 BCS national championship game. Colt is involved in ministries around the world; he and his wife Rachel live in Austin, Texas.
Matt Carter is founding pastor of the eight-thousand-member Austin Stone Community Church. He is a champion for the For the City Network, which helps churches partner with social service agencies to meet local needs. Matt is the author of several books, and he speaks at conferences nationwide. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children.
Marcus Brotherton is the author or co-author of more than twenty-five books, including the New York Times bestseller We Who Are Alive and Remain. He lives with his family in Washington state.
"Colt McCoy and Matt Carter have joined arms to lead men to win. Not just
win in athletics or careers, but to win in life. The pages of this book are packed
with inspirational words and practical guidance. I heartily recommend it."
Max Lucado, pastor and best-selling author
"The Real Win: Pursuing Gods Plan for Authentic Success is a really good book.
It is honest, transparent, convicting, challenging, and instructive. It makes
plain what it really means to be the man! Colt McCoy and Matt Carter invite
men to a higher and greater calling as they follow hard after the real mans
man, Jesus of Nazareth."
Daniel L. Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Men hate asking for directions a little more than they hate to read. It isnt that
we cant read; its just that we need something that keeps our interest and gives
us practical help. Welcome to that book. The Real Win will help you grow in
your faith so that you can be the man God has called you to be."
Darrin Patrick, lead pastor of The Journey
"A gut-wrenching, soul-piercing book that wrestles honestly with questions
every man asks and emotions every man feels, whether he ever admits it or not.
I will recommend this book to all the men in my church. You wont be able to
put it down."
J. D. Greear, author of Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart:
How to Know for Sure You Are Saved and Gospel: Recovering
the Power That Made Christianity Revolutionary
"A wonderful and raw work that gets to the heart of all the areas in which men
have historically struggled. This book is immensely valuable, not because it
points men to success, but because it points men to Jesus and practically walks
through how to win by seeking Him in every area of life."
Nathan Lino, senior pastor of Northeast Houston Baptist Church
"I cant speak highly enough about the way this book addresses manhood in
our culture. Biblically challenging and radically applicable, it honestly addresses
the deepest longings and fears a man faces."
Matt Chandler, author of The Explicit Gospel and Creature of the Word
"This is not your typical formula for a book on success and manhood. By humbly
and honestly walking through their failures, Matt Carter and Colt McCoy
teach the difficult truths we face as men and leaders. I have great hope that
through this book, more and more men will begin to see their struggles in marriage,
career, and family as a way to point them to the ultimate picture of success:
Brad Lomenick, executive director and key visionary of Catalyst
"As a young man fresh out of college, I know Im going to chase something
with the rest of my life. The Real Win helps me lock in on exactly what that
should be. This book identifies whats truly satisfying, whats worthy of being
chased. Im in for the win."
Cory Cotton, cofounder of Dude Perfect and author of Go Big
"We live in a world full of scoreboards. Matt and Colt have experienced both
wins and losses, and Ive seen them both want God more than all of it. They
are men who fight well, and they will lead you to fight well. This is worth
it. In The Real Win, Matt and Colt will move you from a life of striving to one
of fulfillment, living for the God who has already won the ultimate victory."

Colt McCoy, NFL quarterback and Matt Carter, Pastor of Austin Stone Community Church bring together the everyday life of men and bring it into a transparent and honest look at the life of men and their thoughts, struggles and victories.
Following Jesus Christ in the consistent theme that runs through the entire book bringing to light the faithfulness of God in every situation but this is not a ooey gooey book with sappy episodes, no a hard hitting, convicting book with stories of real life struggles that hit home more than once.
Several books sit on my library shelf designed for men but none spoke to me "right to the heart" as this book has. Matt and Colt both share within the pages of their struggles and their victories plus, the book included a bonus section on Mentoring plus a small group reading guide that fits perfectly in the hands of a man.
If you are looking for a Small Group Bible Study Guide for men - this is it. This book will be our next Men's Bible Study Guide for my men. There is a leader's DVD kit also available.

ACS Book FinderAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Men can find guidance through this bookJanuary 17, 2014ACS Book FinderAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Real Win by Colt McCoy and Matt Carter is an excellent book for men of all walks of life. Young men could read this book to help them prepare for life. Adult men can find advice and help for every area and stage of their lives. The book covers topics that have to do with the home, the workplace, personal character, and leaving a worthy legacy behind. Any man seeking to better himself will find guidance through this book.
The beginning of the book introduces these two authors to us. Colt McCoy is currently the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Matt Carter is the pastor of Austin Stone Community Church. Both of these men offer wide perspectives from their very different lives. The premise of this book has to do with the fact that often we see men who are successful according to the world's standards, but then fail in areas of life that we all consider to be valuable: marriage, family, integrity, etc. The main source for these problems is one of idolatry.
The next section of the book deals with the home. The authors give eight sin traps that men are prone to fall into and how to avoid them. They proceed to show how the husband/wife relationship is second in importance to our relationships with our wives. Men must understand how to love their wives. Finally, the authors explain the father's role as spiritual leader within the home. The man must make sure his relationship with God is right, then lead his wife in her relationship to God, and finally see that his children have a right relationship to God.
The next section of the book explains the man's role in the workplace. The authors present several idols that many men place before God in their desire to be successful at work. They encourage men to follow the principles of God's Word in conducting business. This attitude starts when we realize that God has sovereignty placed us in our work, so He is our true "boss." We should work in an excellent way so as to please Him in all we do. This will also dictate our relationships with co-workers of the opposite sex.
The final section of the book centers on personal character. The authors explain why we face trials and what our attitude and outlook should be as we go through trials. They also demonstrate what it means to leave a legacy of whole-hearted service to the Lord. We can do this as we live a life that obviously shows what God is doing in our hearts, remaining faithful to our wives and families, and by being courageous to fulfill the calling that God has placed on each of our lives.
This book was wonderful and easy to read. The end of the book also includes a study guide that goes along with each chapter of the book. So, this book would be great for a person to read alone, or for a group of men to study and encourage each other together. (Critique by Bobby Lyles)

SC2424VermontAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5easy to readJuly 23, 2013SC2424VermontAge: 35-44Gender: femaleThe Real Win, written by quarterback Colt McCoy and Matt Carter is a book written by men, for men! :) I got a chance to read and review this book and though I am not a man, I did enjoy it and recommend it to a male audience. My husband is already enjoying it, and he is not a big reader.
The book's authors focus on different topics of importance in a Christian man's life, such as your legacy, your role as spiritual leader in your home, being tempted, idolatry, trials, and others. They are topics that are relevant and important.
The way this book is written is using illustrations from the lives of the authors. They are little windows into their lives, which many people can identify with. They are not all illustrious, from little to large pictures of how we fail in our own strength, but how God can use us and grow us. There is Scripture and Scriptural principals used throughout the book, not just these men's ideas, but teaching from the Bible.
I think that one of the best aspects of this book, to me, is that it is very readable. What do I mean by that? It's not dry, trudge -through-it reading, but rather is written in an interesting fashion. This is a great way to teach. I would definitely recommend this book; it would also make a great gift for a man you know!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review.
