    Not What I Expected

After reading the rave 5 star reviews for this book, I bought one to preview before buying a bunch to give to pregnant, mommas-to-be.

Was not what I was expecting. I was looking more for a help and guide book. But this reads more like a memoir, sharing her experiences in the first years of her children's lives. I was disappointed that I had to read the same points over and over again. I would get to the next chapter, and think to myself, I have already read about this! How many times can she write about how she met her husband in one book? I guess it's a good for practicing reading comprehension, but bad if you are not needing the practice.

One positive was in the back, a list of additional books to read on certain mothering topics.

I am in the middle of this book right now and I have enjoyed it very much. I appreciate how Trish is always pointing to scripture as our guild in motherhood. The book is written very well (easy to pick up and put down as needed). I will probably check out more writings by this author.

Great read during a new experience in one's life. Trish really helps to highlight the fact that there are always happy moments even when sleep is lacking.

Trishs charming writing style makes parenting sound like fun, and problems solvable. The book is filled with insightful and sometimes humorous, sometimes touching, stories about her own family (she is mom to 4) and things other moms have told her.She offers so many good things in this book, like Mommy Truth No. 5 You will make mistakes, and goes on to write I see true love and compassion in my childrens eyes. One chapter to put into practice is Discovering Camp Palooza: Finding Fun In the Everyday. If you have a question for parenting babies, answers are here. How to establish good relations with in-laws. Whether to work outside the home. This is a great book for new parents to read.

Trish Berg wrote a Palooza kind of book. Rattled is something outstanding of its own kind. It is a study of the leap of faith called motherhood. Her train of thoughts through the maze of motherhood makes her and her book instant girlfiend material. Even grandmas can take a trip down memory lane to those days of being rattled without losing their mind. It is a great Mother's Day gift. I want to buy one for my daughter and include photos of my "been there and done that" days.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Trish Berg
Located in: Dalton, Ohio
Submitted: August 25, 2008

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am a mom to four, ages 13 to 5. My husband, Mike, and I live on a 200 acre beef cattle farm in Ohio. Mike teaches junior high math and coaches junior high football and high school varsity baseball. I write a newspaper column, and blog from our century old farmhouse. I also speak nationally for MOPS and Hearts at Home.

What was your motivation behind this project?  My ministry is helping moms simplify motherhood so they can get back to the joy of being a mom, the way God intended. (Psalm 118:24) I wanted Rattled to be the starting point for moms with a baby on their hip struggling to survive on 2 hours of sleep and still find the missing sock from the dryer. I also want to make moms laugh, and know that they are not alone on their mommy-journey.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Most of all, I want moms to know that we are all in the same boat. No one is perfect, though we fake it in public at times. We all make mommy-mistakes, and many days, only shave one leg during our shower before motherhood calls. I want to be real with moms-share my struggles and blessings, and journey with them. And, I want them to know that God loves them, and He can help you be the mom your children need you to be.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Wow, that is a tough question. I think remembering back over my early mommy years was a fun journey. I actually watched old home movies and re-read my children's baby books to spark those memories. I think writing Rattled helped me realize how fleeting motherhood truly is, and has helped me to enjoy each mommy moment I have, no matter how stressful or silly it may be. And, I also learned that I need cinnamon bun creamer in my coffee at 3 am when I am desperately trying to meet a deadline.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Oh, I love humor writers. I adore Patsy Clairmont and Liz Curtis Higgs. They are true gifts from God. And they inspire me to find the humor in my life and share that with moms everywhere. I also read a lot of fiction, Susan May Warren, Brandilyn Collins. As for parenting authors, I look up to Dr. Kevin Leman, whom I had the joy of meeting when he interviewed me on Focus on the Family sitting in for Dr. Dobson in 2008.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Know that you are the perfect mom for your children. I know that without ever meeting you because God said so the moment He made you their mom. Whether by birth or adoption - God spoke you into motherhood, and He will guide you, love you, and forgive you when you mess up. Be real with your girlfriends. Let your hair down. Share your heart with your children. And know that through it all, you will see God working on your heart and in your life. When I sign books at events, I always put Psalm 118:24, because I want moms to enjoy the journey they are on, wherever they are, whatever today brings. That would be my mission. Helping moms to enjoy their journey. And learn to laugh at their lives. I mean, seriously...when you find a sippy cup that has been missing for 3 months under your couch with solidified milk inside, or your child takes off his diaper and decorates the wall with what was inside, you just have to laugh.....kids can teach you a lot about patience, but they teach you even more about laughing.
