Product Description

Lois and Chris are eager to settle into a calm married life, but that won't happen. While Green continues to recover from a horrendous tornado, the state of Louisiana announces plans to close Green's schools, citing poor academic performance and the area's shrinking population. Lois and Chris know the loss will crush the community and harm students forced to travel more than an hour to classes.

Despite warnings from her coach husband, Lois gets in the middle of the controversy, butting heads with a new teacher, who appears to be a spy for bureaucrats, and pushing the state Legislature with Mayor Eva and Molly, who walks to Baton Rouge in protest. The hotshot consultant sent in to monitor the school is none other than Mayor Eva's long-ago, almost-forgotten ex-husband, mixing up Eva's renewed friendship with Dub McCuller. The district's legal woes bring attorney Terrence to town, much to Dr. Kevin's delight. The highway continues to creep forward, raising more doubts about the future of Green, and Lois learns that to make lasting changes, she will have to refuse to conform but be transformed.

Publisher's Description

Green survived a tornado, but now the town faces a new storm—one that threatens the schools! As Green continues to recover from a horrendous tornado, newlyweds Lois and Chris just want to return to a normal life in their home on Route Two.
But even more threats to Green loom on the horizon. The state of Louisiana announces plans to close Green’s schools, which will put Chris out of work and end a long-standing tradition of community pride. Lois and Chris know the loss will crush the community and harm students forced to travel more than an hour to classes. Then there’s that new highway that’s creeping even closer . . .
But Green has another tradition: Rallying around each other. Newspaper owner Lois, Mayor Eva, and college students unite to fight the bureaucrats, with some surprising—and unexpected results.

Author Bio

Judy Christie writes fiction with a Louisiana flavor, including the five-part Green series about a big-city journalist who winds up running a small-town newspaper in Green, Louisiana. With a writing career that began when she was the editor of her elementary school newspaper, Judy has kept a journal since she was nine years old--and still has all of them. She loves to help busy people slow down and enjoy each day more and is the author of the popular nonfiction "Hurry Less Worry Less" series, filled with practical and encouraging tips. She's a fan of porch swings, fried pies and flea markets around her home in Stonewall, Louisiana. She loves to visit with readers and writers and blogs from her green couch at www.judychristie.com.

Publisher's Weekly

In Christie’s next installment in the ongoing Green series, there’s no rest for the weary townspeople of Green, La., after a devastating tornado. An educational consultant sashays into town to close down Green High, whose students aren’t meeting state benchmarks. Consultant Marcus Hillburn has a very willing helper in Priscilla Robinson, a snake-like new administrator at the high school. Meanwhile, newlyweds Lois Barker Craig and her husband, Chris, a teacher and coach at the high school, are having their home rebuilt; a high school student sustains a serious injury; and a few bad pennies depicted in previous books return to the action. Christie has developed a sweet community, with dogs that can be depended on for comic relief and assorted quirky townspeople with varying histories, squarely in the vein of Jan Karon’s Mitford or Charlene Baumbich’s Partonville. Christie is capable of more depth—there is some subtle and believable redemption taking place—but Green fans will rally to this next edition for newspaper owner Lois and her smalltown friends. (Nov.) ChristianBookPreviews.com

Rally 'Round Green by Judy Christie focuses on a small-town newspaper owner named Lois Craig. Green is a little town facing the devastation of having its only high school shut down forever. Lois Craig, with her basketball coach husband Chris and a full cast of local citizens, fight to save their alma mater. That is not all, however, for Green is also recovering from a disastrous tornado that has torn the town apart and killed several of Lois’s dear friends. The high school is still standing, and the townsfolk need something to remind them that some form of heritage and stability yet remains in their town.

Lois starts out simply as the wife of a school teacher and then becomes the headstrong leader of the protestors. An abundance of friends assists her including Chris, her loving husband. Priscilla Robinson, the antagonist, is the woman working to close Green's school. Lois’s newspaper staff consists of a few rambunctious college students, balanced out by some wise older women whom Lois relies on. The main characters grow enough throughout the book to make them believable, and their struggles and frustration against the executive legislature's decisions are relatable.

Lois Craig and her newspaper staff decide to use the full force of their publication, The Green Item, to fight the school's closing. The tiny paper becomes the driving force in unifying the community to retain the school. Along with this, the newspaper covers many heartfelt scenes, such as the christening of a new church to replace the one destroyed by the tornado and the graduating ceremony of what may be the last class to finish at Green High School.

The book is written in first person, from Lois's point of view, which means the reader spends plenty of time in Lois's head. This is an advantage because her complex character and personality are revealed in her thoughts and circumstances. Her strengths lie in her desire to see Green recover from the tornado and move forward again. Her weaknesses derive from the fact that many of her decisions are spontaneous, shallow, and immature. She has energy, honesty, and love, but she often lacks depth, wisdom, and logic.

Although the plot is interesting, the format of this book makes it difficult to read. Each chapter tends to jump from one period of time in the story to another. There are also several loose ends that are not resolved by the end of the book. Even for a book that considers itself part of an on-going series, unresolved issues can displease readers. The characters are developed adequately throughout the story, but the author presumes that readers have read the prequel to this novel, so she fails to provide back stories for key characters.

Rally 'Round Green is light reading; it is enjoyable to see whether or not Lois will succeed in rallying the town to save their school, and several of the characters are amusing. However, the plot lacks diversity and the central character does not show much in the way of change and growth because of the experience of the story. For lovers of series, go back and do book one before you start this new novel. – Elizabeth de Graaf, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

And we are back to the story line that we were introduced to in the first two books, slow-paced, like drifting along a slow moving stream on a warm summers day. I was really hoping the author would keep the momentum going that was established in book #3, but she didn't so with that being said, I thought this was a decent book and I found myself being drawn into the fate of Green and reconnecting with all the characters of Green. My favorite part was Lois and Chris constructing their house all the problems that went along with that. Those parts made me smile.

While Green is far from recovered from the tornado, a new hazard threatens the town--the state of Louisiana wants to close Green's school and bus the kids to a larger town! Not only will this make it less likely that some kids will succeed academically, it will put Chris, the coach, out of his job. Mayor Eva and Lois and friends go into high gear to try to get the state to do something new--change the decision! The efforts of the townspeople to help each other really grab the heart, and the book is a very encouraging read, maybe the best in the series thus far.

While remodeling Chris' grandmother's home, budget cuts threaten to close the school that Chris teaches & coaches at. Meanwhile Lois and many unhappy residents rally together to help save their small town school. As I frequently see news of schools merging & closing, I was pleased that the author tackled this difficult issue.

Book 4 in the series, Rally Round Green, finds Lois, Chris, and the citizens of Green continuing to rebuild from the rubble the twister left in it's path.

When the state makes plans to build a highway bypass and shut down the town's schools, Lois is afraid the town will lose it's identity altogether. But if the citizens of Green have learned to do one thing over the past few years, it's rally together for the good of the town and each other.

The Green series by Judy Christie follows the story of Lois, owner of the Green News, but is filled with plenty of other well developed characters who each have their own plot-lines. These books keep the reader hoping. They are fast paced but thoroughly entertaining.

I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
