Clear Truth for Unclear Times
Well this book isn't quite my normal review fare but when it came up offered on Bethany House's review program I knew it was I book I wanted to read! For quite a while now I have been interested in learning more about Islam from a historic perspective and Islam from a Christian perspective and this book really filled the bill!
Mr. Stearns begins his book by laying out the cultural landscape of today's world and explaining multiculturalism, coexistence and what the Bible says about understanding the times we live in; additionally exploring current events and Biblical end times prophecy and how each of these things operate as cogs in the ever turning wheel of our world. His approach is methodical and clear in laying out the historical background, current cultural relevance and future likely significance for what he calls the 'three houses'. These three houses 'Radical Islam', 'Militant Secularism', and 'Judeo-Christianity' are each given their own chapters to delve deeper in to the worldviews of each and how they have reached out and affected the world we live in today. The book wraps up with three final chapters where Stearns steps back from looking at each of these houses and takes a look at the ultimate house- God's House. In these wrap up chapters Stearns really explores how Christians today are to be living and that is ultimately with eternity and Christ's kingdom in view!
I really enjoyed Stearns style and the way he put this book together, it reads smoothly and brings the reader along for an enlightening ride that is sure to wake up those still asleep in the tumultuous river of current events and buoy up those who are already awake and riding those rapids. At times I do find Stearns repeating themes and thoughts but I didn't find it detrimental to the book just reinforcing and building of his theme. I truly appreciated the wrap up of this book and the clear and inspiring call that is given to the Church today to rouse themselves and remember who they are and what God expects of them and what they can do about that. It personally saddens me that at large the Church does seem to be uninspired and uncaring to what is happening in the world around them. After reading this book I don't know how any Christian can remain uncaring of what is happening and uninspired to do something! It was a great read with lots of great information for the informed reader (my book is highlighted within an inch of it's life!) and a great read with lots of food for thought for the uninformed friend or relative that you should definitely be passing this book along to!
This book deserves every one of the 5 stars I'm giving it!

I'd give it a 5 star recommendation for some...
"No, We Can't: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and the Myth of Coexistence," by Robert Stearns, is destined by both the political and religious tone of its title to appeal to a certain kind of reader while it simultaneously repels another. It's highly unlikely that many Muslims or self-declared Secularists are going to read this book, and that's fine, as it is intended for a Christian audience. Within that Christian audience I predict that there will be a wide range of opinion on the merits of Stearn's work, and I'm basing that on my own wide-ranging opinion of it. That's going to make this something of a mixed review. For some readers I'd highly recommend it, but for others- I wouldn't. Stay with me, I'll tell you why.
"No We Can't" began with a basic layman's overview of the three dominant worldviews; Islam, Judeo-Christianity, and Secularism, and Stearns made a compelling case for the importance of understanding how these three worldviews will increasingly form the basis of socio-political interaction-and conflict-in America and throughout the world. But just as I thought the book was off to a good start, I hit Chapter 2. It took me two attempts to make sense of this chapter and how it fit into the overall context of the book. I suppose because I'm not much of an alarmist, I was a little slow on the uptake; the first time through I felt like I was reading an adult version of Chicken Little and his mantra, "the sky is falling". I got it the second time- that's how determined I was to give this book a chance- and I admit, Stearns makes a good point, though he could have made it much more clearly; if we fail to understand the Muslim or Secular worldviews and the beliefs that form them, we will also fail to correctly interpret and understand the socio-political behavior of Islamic or Secular states. Rest assured, I have no intention of giving a chapter-by-chapter review of this book. From Chapter 2 on it was generally touch-and-go; some good points made, but often wrapped in weak, superficial presentation. From time-to-time some good illustrating examples, but overall there seemed to be a dearth of these, and I was left with the sense that it wasn't for lack of them, but rather lack of time spent researching them. So, my thoughts are this; if you're interested in expanding your understanding of international relations, particularly from the angle of how worldview shapes world affairs, and especially if you're interested in strengthening your own Judeo-Christian worldview, than this book will be a helpful and valuable tool. However, "No We Can't" is probably not going to satisfy those with more advanced interest, particularly scholarly interest, in the subject, though you'll pick up a few good insights here and there.

This book will challenge you
If you enjoy reading about world events and theories about the end of time, this could be a book you would enjoy reading. Stearns explores the 'three houses' dominating our time: Radical Islam, Militant Secularism, and Judeo-Christianity. Whatever your faith background, this book will challenge you.

Excellent introduction to the myth of coexistence

Synopsis & My Thoughts
Christians - believers in the Bible, which is the infallible word of God, commanded by Christ to make disciples of all the nations.
Muslims - the followers of Muhammad, commanded by him to dominate the world by force, slaughtering all infidels. They are well on their way to dominating the western world - just by high birth rates and immigration.
Humanism. The worship and idolatry of self. If it feels good, do it. If it seems to fit in with common sense, it is right. Truth depends on a variety of factors, and no one is supposed to oppose anyone else. These are the type of people most likely to be sporting a "coexist", "peace", "respect", or other similar bumper sticker.
{ "C" = Islam. "O"Pacifism. "E"=Homosexuality. "X"=Judaism. "I"=Paganism/Witchcraft. "S"=Taoism. "T"=Christianity. }
While the idea of coexistence sounds nice, this book explains many of the reasons why it will not & can not, work.
Although I can by no means say that I agree with every single argument presented in this book, I do agree with the main premise and arguments. We are in a spiritual battle, one which can not be resolved by agreeing to disagree. To illustrate this, let me give a little fictional conversation a minute.
American tourist: "Hello, my name is Bob."
Cannibal: "Good day, I think you ought to be my supper."
Bob: "I really don't think that you are correct. I won't taste very good."
Cannibal: "I disagree. You will taste very good."
Bob: "Well, lets just agree to disagree. I won't push my belief on you, and you don't push yours on me. Now lets go eat something else for supper."
Cannibal: "You're trying to push your beliefs on me by not letting me eat you. Now get into the pot if you want to be consistent."
Obviously, trying to coexist in this situation will not work. Bob either needs to vacate the premises or disable the cannibal. When two radically different beliefs clash, one of them must give way. Either Bob must agree with the cannibal and get into the pot, or the cannibal must agree not to eat Bob. Both notions cannot live peacefully together, and neither can we "coexist".
I give No, We Can't 8 out of 10 stars.
