Product Description

Jerusha has spent months making the most beautiful quilt anyone in Apple Creek, Ohio, has ever seen, and she knows it's going to take first prize at the Quilt Fair in Dalton. The prize will be her ticket out of the Amish way of life-away from the memories of her dead daughter and her tormented husband. But on the way to the Fair, she gets caught in the Storm of The Century and Jerusha's driver crashes their car. While the driver goes for help, Jerusha is led by someone, or something, to the side of a lost little girl. By the time the storm clears, Jerusha finds there is a greater prize to be won than money and blue ribbons.

A Quilt for Jenna (book 1) had me near tears wondering and worrying about Jerusha through the whole book. This was a very different kind of Amish book written during WWII and the 1950s where Reuben, an Amish man and husband to Jerusha went off to fight in WWII before they were married. Joining the Armed Forces I've heard is very against the Amish Faith. Reuben comes home from the war with his English friend Bobby, marries Jerusha and they have a baby girl name Jenna. Years later Jenna gets sick but Reuben refuses to take her to the hospital because he believes God will heal her. Bobby comes along and rushes Jenna to the hospital where she later dies. Reuben and Jerusha are devastated and Reuben decides to leave. Jerusha makes a quilt hoping to sell it at the fair and use the money to leave the Amish faith. The day she leaves for the fair with her English driver is when a really big snowstorm hits. The car slides into a ditch and no one can see it. The search for Jerusha is on. Can Bobby help? Do they find Jerusha and who else do they find? Does Reuben return home? Read the book to find out. The book was very well written and I recommend reading it. Author Patrick E. Craig has made me wanting more. Now on to read The Road Home, book 2 of this series.

A Quilt for Jenna is one of the best books in the Amish genre that I have read. I think why I found it so intriguing was because the author went back and forth from the past to the present in this story. Why is this different from what a lot of author's do? The description of the events were so thorough and vivid that you were never lost to what was going on. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This story has the Amish people and English people very involved in the lives of each other.

I truly enjoyed turning the pages to find out what was going on with Jerusha, Reuben and Bobby.

War is never pretty and we find this to be the case in this book. Will Reuben be able to put the horror behind him? Will Jerusha forgive him for his part that he played in the war? After all, Amish people do not participate in violence and war. How about Bobby? How did the war affect him?

We find the characters in this book have a love/hate relationship with God. Why would someone hate God with every fiber of their being? What possible reasons would they have for rejecting God?

Will Jerusha, Reuben, and Bobby be able to come to terms with their pasts? Can they survive their hurts, their unforgiveness, and put their trust in God? Will the miracles of God melt their hearts?

I gave this book 5 stars and wish I could give it more. Author Patrick E. Craig has made a fan out of me. I can not wait to read The Road Home, book two in this series.

I want to first say that I enjoyed the authors note at the beginning of the book. In it he explains why the location and time period were chosen for the story and how they helped him create his characters. I believe that explanation really aided in setting up the story itself to be more credible and enjoyable.

I gave this book 5/5 stars. I thought the plot flowed well from one scene to the next. The characters had intriguing personalities and helped the story be more interesting. I liked the setting and time period, as they became a real part of the story. Overall it was a quick moving and enjoyable story. I would recommend this book to all who like Amish fiction and those looking for an enjoyable Christian fiction book to read.

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Reuben and Jerusha are deeply in love but Reuben questions the Amish faith. He leaves the fold to enlist in the marines in the throes of World War II. Jerusha discovers upon Reuben's return that he is not the same man she knew before he left. His scars run deep, and Jerusha is concerned about his change in character and his sudden conviction to follow the Amish ordnung to the letter. Jerusha and Reuben marry, but the tragic loss of their only child tears them apart. Jerusha's way of handling her grief is to propel herself into her quilting. Her drive for perfection results in haughty pride over her masterpiece quilt. It becomes her escape route from the overwhelming grief she carries and anger toward God at the core of her being. Reuben bolts from his fears and guilt, and travels cross country to Colorado where he seeks a reprieve and an end to his anxieties. Both Reuben and Jerusha are battling their emotions in an unorthodox manner in an attempt to find relief from their captivity.

A Quilt for Jenna is much more than a story about the Amish culture. It is a multifaceted presentation of very strong characters in this novel. Insights into overpowering emotional burdens and beliefs, or lack thereof, are challenged and examined. Jerusha and Reuben Springer are portrayed in depth as their stories unfold and through the insurmountable challenges they encounter. Patrick Craig is gifted with the art of creating vivid pictorial settings, creating reality in this story of tragedy and triumph.
